About the Department

Department of Visual Arts

The mission of the Southeastern Louisiana University Department of Visual Arts is to educate students in the visual arts and art education with a critical foundation that incorporates a strong background in art history and solid technical and conceptual skills, with an emphasis on the development of visual languages, tools for critical thinking, and the expression of creative visions.

The faculty prides itself on its exclusive focus on undergraduate education, as well as a strong commitment to students. Small class sizes ensure a creative atmosphere of personal exploration and discovery where each student receives individual attention. The faculty represent every area of emphasis within the program and remain current with their work by maintaining activity and visibility within their professional fields.

The facilities and technology housed at Southeastern’s Department of Visual Arts is an impressive array of resources. From wood shops and natural-light studios to computer labs and rapid-prototyping technology, students have access to a rare variety of tools and technology enabling both traditional and contemporary art practices.

The 7000 square foot Contemporary Art Gallery coordinates exhibitions and educational programs connecting students with opportunities to engage with artworks and artists while giving them insight into current directions in contemporary art.

The Visual Arts Quad is comprised of four buildings on the southwestern edge of the Southeastern Louisiana University campus occupying Clark Hall, Clark Hall Annex, East Stadium, and East Stadium Annex. In addition, Art History classes are taught in a lecture classroom in Fayard Hall. The Contemporary Art Gallery is also located in the East Stadium Annex.
