Welcome
The English Department traces its heritage to the founding of Southeastern in 1925, when the first English instructor, D Vickers, joined four other teachers to make up the college’s entire faculty. With those five instructors dividing a dozen subjects among them, Vickers taught English, speech, civics, and she acted as the new college’s first librarian. Now English has grown to a department of 60–70 faculty, housed in the building named after its founder, and prepares students for a range of professions. These include education, law, professional writing, creative writing, and other liberal arts studies.
We offer a wide range of majors, concentrations, and minors across the many sub-disciplines of English. Our students study poetry and fiction, creative writing, web design, linguistics and local dialects, the teaching of writing and literature, film, theater, and much more.
Our faculty have received international acclaim for their scholarship. Our scholarly and literary journals are major players in their areas, our Writing Project links local teachers to a national network, and our student organizations are a vital part of the Southeastern community. Join us to experience the varied, incredible powers of language with a major in English!
See Southeastern's 2008-2009 General Catalogue for the English Department's information on admissions, major, minor and concentration requirements.
