Welcome

Dr. David Hanson

Department Head

Hanson / WelcomeThe Department of English prepares students for a variety of professions, including creative writing, professional writing, education, publishing, law, and other careers needing a strong foundation in writing and liberal arts.

We offer a wide range of majors, concentrations, and minors across the many sub-disciplines of English. Our students learn about poetry and fiction, creative writing, web design, linguistics and local dialects, the teaching of writing and literature, film, drama and performance studies, and much more.

We offer B.A. degrees in English and in English Education.  The B.A. in English is available in two concentrations: Language and Literature, and Creative Writing. We also offer an M.A. in English, both as a general degree and as a degree with concentrations in Creative Writing, Language and Literacy, or Professional Writing.

As a cooperative effort, the Departments of English, Computer Science, Communication, and Visual Arts also offer an interdisciplinary Minor in Publishing Studies. We also offer minors in English, Creative Writing, Professional and Technical Writing, and Gender Studies.

Our faculty have received international acclaim for their scholarship. Our scholarly and literary journals are major players in their areas, our Writing Project links local teachers to a national network, and our student organizations form a vital part of the Southeastern community.

Join us to experience the varied, incredible powers of language with a major in English!

Department News

Associate Professor Jayetta Slawson has been honored with the 2012 President's Award for Excellence in Teaching.

In her ten years at Southeastern, Jayetta has steadily enlivened the Department and the University with her fearless classroom teaching, student mentoring, and leadership of the Southeastern Writing Center. Her current teaching interest is centered in memoir writing, an outgrowth of her research interests in identity performance at the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality.
