Message from the Dean

Welcome! On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Education, we welcome you to Southeastern Louisiana University. We wish you a great summer and some time to read, reflect and continue to grow. We are so fortunate to be able to work at such a great university to serve young people and families in southeast Louisiana.  Congratulation to our graduates of Spring 2013.  What a legacy of excellence you leave!

 

Every day we appreciate the great work of our students in representing us so well.  Being an effective educator takes a great deal of commitment to do what is the right thing everyday for children.

 

 

Our goal is to prepare highly effective leaders who will enable children, families, schools and community agencies to reach their fullest potential.

 

This an exciting time in education in Louisiana. You will be amazed at how many issues and ideas are on the table around the state. You may want to look at LA Believes and review the major changes that are rolling out for teachers and leaders across the state.

 

We look forward to talking with you about the great things happening in our College.

Thank you for joining us November 1, 2012 for our Summit on the Conditions of Children, Families, Schools, and Society in Southeast Louisiana.

For too long we have worked in silos across community agencies, businesses, schools, colleges, government, etc., all attempting to meet the complex needs of children and families.  It is important to work together more effectively to really address the impact of poverty and other social issues that jeopardize our educational, social and economic future.

Blessings in a Backpack

 

Southeastern students with the education honor society Kappa Delta Pi, as well as other volunteers, prepare backpacks with healthy snacks and children's books that are distributed weekly to needy children at Midway School in Hammond. The program, "Blessings in a Backpack," is part of a nationwide effort to assist children living at or below the poverty level.

 

When Southeastern education major Chantal Shoemake read about Blessings in a Backpack, a national program designed to assist underprivileged school children, she envisioned something similar for the Hammond community. After researching the program, which provides a weekend supply of healthy snacks and reading materials for eligible children, she persuaded her fellow members of the Southeastern chapter of the international education honor society Kappa Delta Pi to adopt Blessings in a Backpack as their community service project. Remembering Dr. Hancock

The College of Education is grieving the loss of one of our own. Dr. Robert Jason Hancock died on October 6 at the age of 41. Dr. Hancock will be remembered for his keen mind and unwavering passion for the opportunities of emerging technologies to improve our lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Hancock's family and friends at this difficult time. I ask that each of our College students, staff, faculty and friends take a moment today to remember the life of Dr. Hancock and to re-dedicate ourselves to our mission to be the best at preparing new leaders in all our disciplines to effectively serve children, families and schools.

The College of Education and the Department of Educational Leadership and Technology held a Memorial service in honor of Dr. Hancock on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 4:00 p.m, in the Lecture Hall of the Teacher Education Center on the Southeastern Campus.
