     HAMMOND – Three area students received Southeastern Louisiana University College of Nursing and Health Sciences' highest honor, the Dean's Award, at the college's annual honors convocation held May 1 in the Student Union Theatre.

     The Dean's Award was presented to Angela Threeton of Hammond by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Ryan Bermudez of Slidell by the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies, and Tiffany Hollenbeck of New Orleans by the School of Nursing. Bermudez was also recognized as the Outstanding Graduate in Exercise Science.

     The Significant Partnership Award was presented by each department in recognition of contributions to the educational programs in the college. The Regina Coeli Child Development Center at Southeastern's Head Start was recognized by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders for serving as a training site for student clinicians. The Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies recognized Olympic style strength training and weightlifting coach Gayle Hatch of Spectrum Fitness Center in Baton Rouge for his work with athletic training students. The School of Nursing recognized the Tangipahoa Parish School System, which provides opportunities for students in areas of health screenings, health education, and working with the school nurses.

     Also at the convocation, the Southeastern Alumni Association honored Charla Buford Johnson of Gonzales as the school's Alumnus of the Year. A 2006 graduate of Southeastern's master's program in nursing, Johnson was recognized for her work in the field of orthopedic care and nursing services. She has received a number of awards for her work, including the Clinical Excellence Award for Nursing Practice and the Nurse Excellence Award presented by the Baton Rouge District Nurses Association. In 2010, she received the Nurse of the Year Award by the Louisiana State Nurses Association and last year was named Distinguished Alumnus of Our Lady of the Lake School of Nursing, where she received her diploma in nursing.

     Honored at the ceremony were:

Lafayette: Amanda Rivault, Lafayette, the Charles W. Campbell Memorial Award in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

New Orleans: Tiffany Hollenback, New Orleans, the Dean's Award in the School of Nursing.

St. Charles Parish: Pamela Pourciau, Destrehan, the Graduate Scholar Award in Nursing.

St. Tammany Parish: Ryan Bermudez, Slidell, the Dean's Award by the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies and the award for Outstanding Graduate in Exercise Science; Kelly Costello, Slidell, the School of Nursing Leadership and Service Award; Chase Lawson, Covington, Outstanding Graduate in Sports Management; and Joseph Roberts, the Brian Wang Award for Outstanding Graduate in Health and Physical Education Teacher Education.

Tangipahoa Parish: Mindy Manzella, the Opal Carl Award in Nursing; Courtney Montreuil, the Graduate Scholar Award in Communication Sciences and Disorders; Angela Threeton, Dean's Award in Commuication Sciences and Disorders; Henry Rop, the Outstanding Graduate in Health Education and Promotion; and Nancy Dardis Webb, Graduate Scholar Award in Kinesiology and Health Studies. All are from Hammond.

Washington Parish: Frank Simone, Angie, the Evelyn Davis Award in Nursing.

West Baton Rouge Parish: Natalie Prejean, Brusly, Outstanding Graduate in Health Studies.

West Feliciana Parish: Claire Ford, St. Francisville, Outstanding Graduate in Fitness and Human Performance.

5) SOUTHEASTERN HONORS TANGI SCHOOL SYSTEM -- Southeastern Louisiana University's School of Nursing presented its Significant Partnership Award to the Tangipahoa Parish School System at its recent honors convocation. Accepting the award on behalf of the system was school nurse Verna Thompson, center. Presenting the award were Nursing Instructor Mitzie Meyers, left, and Ann Carruth, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

 

6) SOUTHEASTERN HONORS AREA STUDENTS (Washington) -- Southeastern Louisiana University's College of Nursing and Health Sciences recently recognized outstanding students at the college's honors convocation.
