Writing Marathons
In 1994, SLWP held its first writing marathon in New Orleans, drawing on Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones and Ernest Hemingway's A Moveable Feast. During a marathon, writers roam the city in small groups, pausing to write in 10 to 20 minute sessions, then sharing their efforts. “It’s all about seeing the world as a writer and giving oneself the chance to do this,” Director Richard Louth says. Since that first event, writing marathons have become a staple of SLWP, NWP, and other writing project sites around the country. An article in The Quarterly provides more detail, as well as a special radio show. In January of 2006, the SLWP held its first marathon with a virtual component using our site at www.tappedin.org.
