HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University inducted 109 undergraduate and graduate students and members of the faculty into its chapter of the prestigious national honor society, Phi Kappa Phi.
At the annual induction banquet May 2, three students received the chapter's Lou Ballard Endowed Scholarship: history major Bradley Davis of New Orleans, nursing major Josephine Kpebah Gyinia of Hammond, and computer science and mathematics major Sunil Shahi of Nepal.
At the induction ceremony, Chapter Secretary Joan Faust was recognized as a Distinguished Member of the organization, making her only the third individual from the Southeastern chapter to receive the honor. Faust, a professor of English and resident of Mandeville, was honored last year by Phi Kappa Phi with its Love of Learning Award.
Recognized as Outstanding Juniors from the university's academic colleges were: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Jordan E. Hotard of Denham Springs; Business, Samantha Chavers of Denham Springs; Education, Rebecca L. Schafer of Baton Rouge; Nursing and Health Sciences, Erin St. Pierre of Larose; and Science and Technology, Anthony D. Haase of Loranger. Danielle M. Hebert of Livingston received the Outstanding Freshman Award, and Rajendra Shrestha of Nepal was named Outstanding Honor Student.
The honors organization also recognized several members of the Southeastern faculty and staff. Inducted were Angela Dunnington of Sims Memorial Library, Edgar N. Reyes of the Department of Mathematics, Penny Shockett, Biological Sciences; and Kimberly Caruso and Erin Wheeler of Classic Upward Bound.
To be considered for membership in the organization, a student must be in the top 10 percent of their senior or graduate class or a second semester junior in the top 7.5 percent of his or her class.
This year's initiates into Phi Kappa Phi are listed by parish and city.
