Guest lecturer at Southeastern to present “The Harmony in Numbers”

HAMMOND – Composer Zack Browning will present a lecture titled "Harmony in Numbers" on Thursday,
Feb. 28, at 4 p.m in Pottle Music Building Auditorium. Open to the public, the lecture
is about the use of numbers in music and is geared to a general audience.
"The Harmony of Numbers is an examination of numbers in music through the use
of golden section proportions, ancient Chinese magic squares, and feng shui in compositions
by James Brown, Phil Collins, Eminem, Peter Maxwell Davies, Claude Debussy and Zack
Browning," said Kari Besharse, Southeastern lecturer of music theory and composition.
"The lecture will also include a discussion of Browning's 'Network Slammer' for flute
and computer sounds, which is based on the Magic Square of the Sun, and String Quartet,
which is based on the Lo Shu Square as it appears in period eight of the Flying Star
System of feng shui."
Browning is a composer whose music has been described as "way-cool in attitude...speed-demon
music" by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and "propulsive, giddy, rocking... a rush of cyclic riffs and fractured meters" by
The New York Times. Browning's recent composition awards include a 2011 Individual Artist Project Grant
from the Illinois Arts Council for a new CD of his music titled "Secret Pulse" and
a 2010 University of Illinois FAA Creative Fellowship for research and performances
in China, Taiwan, and South Korea.
Browning is an associate professor emeritus of music at the University of Illinois
and the director of the Salvatore Martirano Memorial Composition Award.
