HAMMOND – The Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern Louisiana University is hosting a comprehensive series of workshops specifically designed to help high school age entrepreneurs explore and test business ideas and get started on the right path.

Offered in cooperation with the Livingston Economic Development Council and other partners, "Write Your Own Check: Be an Entrepreneur" is a series that consists of six, three-hour sessions that will be held on Tuesdays beginning Oct. 9 through Nov. 13 in Walker at the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center from 6 to 9 p.m.

The series will prepare participants for the critical business planning process and address the most common issues faced by startups, said Sandy Summers, assistant director of the Southeastern SBDC.

"This program is designed to help young entrepreneurs understand the concepts involved with assessing a business idea; marketing a product or service; understanding business financials and how they work; and how to fund and finance a business," said Summers.    "Starting a business of your own can be one of the most exciting, rewarding and challenging experiences in your life, but there is a lot more to building a successful business than just being good at providing a service or producing a product."

The cost to attend all six classes is $120, and scholarships are available to student entrepreneurs. Sessions will include an abundance of tools and resources.

Scholarship candidates must be residents of Livingston Parish; possess a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher; submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher that includes verification of GPA; and attend all sessions.

Homeschooled students must submit a letter from a parent or homeschool instructor that includes verification of GPA in the letter. In addition, the student must submit a personal statement that includes why he or she is interested in attending the program and what they hope to gain as a result of participating in the program.
