Southeastern names van Delden head of Computer Science-IT Department

HAMMOND – Sebastian van Delden, former associate professor in the mathematics and computer science at the University of South Carolina Upstate since 2004, has been named the head of the Department of Computer Science and Industrial Technology at Southeastern Louisiana University.
"I am so excited to join the Southeastern team," van Delden said. "I knew that I was joining a team of talented teachers and ambitious researchers, but their extracurricular commitment to the success of our students is truly remarkable."
With degree programs in the Computer Science and Industrial Technology Department offering a combination of theoretical and hands-on coursework, van Delden said he is impressed with the success Southeastern graduates have securing well-paying jobs upon graduation.
"The future of our department is indeed very bright, with goals that include curriculum innovation, establishing new industry partnerships, and expanding community engagement initiatives that draw young students into the exciting fields of computer science, engineering technology, industrial technology and occupational safety, health and environment," he added.
With a research focus on visual/voice guided industrial robotics, van Delden is the author or co-author of numerous articles in professional journals and has had success in attracting grant funding for research projects.
"Dr. van Delden has a unique combination of interests and talents that made him the ideal choice to lead the Department of Computer Science and Industrial Technology," said Daniel McCarthy, dean of the College of Science and Technology. "Although he is a computer scientist, he has extensive experience working with robotic systems and has been actively involved with community outreach and guiding students in research projects. His blend of computing and technological expertise, along with a strong commitment to educating students, makes him a perfect fit for Southeastern."
Van Delden earned his doctorate in computer science in 2003, a master of science in computer science in 2001, and a bachelor of science in computer science in 1999, all from the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
The Southeastern Department of Computer Science and Industrial Technology enrolls more than 900 students majoring in four accredited degree programs.
