KSLU wins 2009 Communicator "Silver Award of Distinction"

HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University’s public radio station, 90.9 KSLU, has received an Award of Distinction from the International Communicator Awards.
This is the second time the station was honored with an International Communicator Award for “Rock School,” a weekly one-hour show that airs Thursdays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m. and features classic rock music and little-known facts about legendary artists. Hosted by Chad (“Chad P”) Pierce, KSLU underwriting representative, and Southeastern communication professor Joe Burns, the show was first broadcast in spring 2007 and has since aired programs covering over 145 original topics.
“KSLU plays an important role as the only public radio station on the north shore,” said Southeastern President John L. Crain, “The fact that its programming is available online gives it an even wider presence. The Communicator Award recognizes the innovative and entertaining programming that KSLU is dedicated to producing.”
Rock School, Crain said, shows how collaboration of faculty with broadcasting experience, professional staff, and student assistance can contribute to an award-winning, entertaining project with a strong educational component.
“Rock School is one of the best shows on KSLU; not a day goes by that someone doesn’t tell me they’re a KSLU fan and they love Rock School,” said Todd Delaney, KSLU general manager. “The excitement and passion that Dr. Burns and Chad have for the music is contagious, and that’s what great radio is all about. Rock School entertains and educates a nationwide audience week after week. That’s what this award signifies – radio programming at its highest level.”
During the fall semester, Rock School will cover such topics as “The Who’s Tommy,” “Best Rock Bassists and Best Bass Riffs,” “Billboard Chart Achievements,” “Rock Songs Based on Classical Pieces,” “The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time,” “The Best Screams in Rock and Roll,” and “The Tallest and Shortest Rock Stars.”
The Communicator Awards is the largest and most competitive awards program honoring creative excellence by communications professionals. The 15th Annual Communicator Awards received more than 9,000 entries from across the United States and around the world.
The awards are judged and overseen by the International Academy of the Visual Arts, an organization of more than 200 leading professionals from various disciplines dedicated to the progress and evolving nature of traditional and interactive media.
KSLU, the north shore’s only public radio station, has won numerous state and national awards during the last 30 years, including being named 2006 medium market “Radio Station of the Year” by the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters. Programming content ranges from in-depth local, national and business news and performance programs such as “World Café” and “This American Life” to locally produced jazz, blues and popular music programs. KSLU also serves as a hands-on education facility for Southeastern students interested in broadcasting careers.
