Rownd receives national Phi Kappa Phi Award of Excellence

Jane Frances Rownd of Hammond, a senior vocal performance major, is one of 40 students nationwide to receive the honor society’s Award of Excellence. She plans to use the fellowship’s $2,000 award to pursue a master’s degree in vocal performance at Indiana University, one of the nation’s top music schools.
Rownd is the second Southeastern student to receive the Award of Excellence in the Southeastern chapter’s 53-year history. Music performance major Dana Meidinger was a recipient in 2002.
Rownd, the daughter of Harry and Ann Rownd, began studying violin at the age of six and trumpet as a fourth grader. She was drum major of the Hammond High School band and a member with the Louisiana Youth Orchestra and All-State Choir. At Southeastern, where she studies with David Bernard, she has appeared in numerous Opera/Music Theatre Workshop productions, including “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “The Marriage of Figaro” and “Die Fledermaus.”
She is a member of the Concert Choir and has also performed and soloed with the Women’s Chorale and University Chorus. She also serves as a cantor at Holy Ghost and Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic churches.
A President’s List student, she was the recipient of the Delta Omicron Outstanding Sophomore Award and took first place in the Senior Women division of National Association of Teachers of Singing regional competition in 2008. She will receive her Bachelor of Music degree May 16.
Southeastern has also had five recipients of $5,000 Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship, which is awarded to 60 students nationally each year. Craig Alton Thomas of St. Catherine, Jamaica, received the fellowship in 2008, Albert “Snapper” Poche of Ponchatoula in 2007, Sean Patrick Kerrigan of Kenner in 2004, David Edward Thomas in 1969, and Richard David Ramsey of Hammond in 1968.
