     HAMMOND – Jessica Wheeler of Denham Springs, Craig Thomas of St. Catherine, Jamaica, and Michaelyn Hernandez of Baton Rouge each received Southeastern Louisiana University College of Nursing and Health Sciences’ highest honor, the Dean’s Award, at the college’s annual honors convocation held April 26 in the Student Union Theatre.

     Wheeler was recognized by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Thomas by the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies, and Hernandez by the School of Nursing.

     The college presented its Alumnus of the Year award to Lisa Johnson, assistant professor and coordinator for Louisiana State University’s fitness studies concentration and health studies minor. Johnson, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi University for Women and doctoral degree from LSU, earned her master’s degree in 1997 at Southeastern.

     She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and has 22 national and international presentations to her credit.  Her thesis project, “Effects of estrogen replacement therapy on DHEA, DHEAS, and cortisol responses to exercise in women,” was published in the prestigious journal “Fertility and Sterility” and, as an important study, was consistently cited and earmarked for review in the “Yearbook of Sports Medicine.” 

     The college also presented the Graduate Scholar Award to students in each of its departments – Melanie G. Derry of Baton Rouge, Communication Sciences and Disorders; Louvenia Askew of Pascagoula, Miss., Health Studies; Angelique Ortego of Ville Platte, Kinesiology; and Edith Durand of Albany, Nursing.

     Also at the honors convocation, area institutions were presented the Significant Partnership Award in recognition of their contributions to the educational programs in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Landmark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and TriStar Rehab were recognized for its speech therapy department by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders; the Baton Rouge Area Sport Foundation was cited by the Kinesiology and Health Studies Department for its contribution to the university’s sport management program; and Sanderson Farms’ Hammond campus and the Louisiana Endoscopy Center of Baton Rouge received the award from the School of Nursing.
