Big Event draws 800 students for community service
Approximately 800 Southeastern students came together Saturday (March 9) and picked
up rakes, shovels, paint brushes and other tools to participate in the university's
third annual community service day called "The Big Event."
After gathering bright and early at 8 a.m. in the War Memorial Student Union
Mall, the students – all dressed in bright yellow Big Event-3 t-shirts – gathered
in teams to hit more than 40 sites in the area where they performed a wide range of
chores from landscaping, to trash pickups, to painting.
Southeastern President John L. Crain greeted the assembled students from the
Student Union balcony, congratulating them on their dedication and commending them
on their strong commitment of community service. Their efforts, he said, have helped
the university earn a three-year consecutive presence on the national President's
Honor Roll for Community Service.
The sites included area elementary, middle and high schools, St. Albert's Catholic
Student Center, Serenity House, Hammond Headstart, the Children's Discovery Center
and numerous locations on the campus itself.
Child Advocacy Services (CASA) coordinator Lori Banks watched as students and
staff worked on the organization's buildings and grounds, sprucing up the playground
and painting offices.
"We have a great relationship with Southeastern, using their students in counseling
and social work as interns," said Banks. "But as a nonprofit organization, we don't
have the funds to do the kind of extra work that these students are providing today."
"It's great to see this many students pulling together and making short work
of some big jobs," said Student Government Association President Branden Summers,
as he handed out cold water to students laying sod and planting azaleas on the campus.
The Big Event is sponsored by the Southeastern SGA.
The Big Event was started at Texas A&M university 30 years ago and has spread
to universities nationwide. It is considered one of the largest service days among
college students.

Employee Wellness Health Fair
The Southeastern Employee Wellness Committee proudly announces the 2013 Employee Wellness
Health Fair on Tuesday, March 12, from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. Located in the breezeway between
the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building and the Nursing Building, the health fair
serves as the kickoff to a multi-departmental effort to encourage employees to determine
how healthy they currently are and what they can do to be healthier.
The foundation of the Southeastern Employee Wellness program is the wellness
wheel and its seven components: intellectual, spiritual, occupational, physical,
social, emotional and environmental.
"Ideally, we want a wellness wheel that rolls as smoothly as possible," said
Dollie Hebert Crouch, director of Recreational Sports and Wellness. "In order to do
that, you must be able to assess and to understand where you are in each of the seven
areas."
All activities and programs throughout the year will correlate with each of the
wellness dimensions.
The 2013 Employee Wellness Health Fair will include screenings and services from
Southeastern's faculty, such as cholesterol, body fat, and blood pressure. Nutritionists
will be available to speak with individuals regarding nutritional habits, and chair
massages will be available. Vendors include Mary Bird Perkins, Farmers' Market, Mary
Kay, La Capitol and many more.
Employees can register for a drawing to include door prizes such as "goodie baskets"
and gift certificates. Rain site for the fair will be the Student Union Ballroom.

Southeastern to celebrate community, academics with Rock 'n Roar on March 23
Southeastern's annual campus-community festival, "Rock 'n Roar," scheduled for Saturday,
March 23, promises to be a fun-filled day for children and adults.
In its 17th year, Rock 'n Roar showcases Southeastern's academics and fun atmosphere
for visiting District 8 Literary Rally high school students, alumni and community
friends, said Kathy Pittman, director of the Southeastern Alumni Association.
Scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the War Memorial Student Union and park, the
festival will also offer art, baseball, and dance camps for children.
Art education students will offer a hands-on art camp for children ages 5-12
from 9-11:30 a.m. with two art projects to take home. The camp, which costs $10, will
take place in Clark Hall.
A camp for young baseball enthusiasts is scheduled for 9-11:30 a.m. at the softball
field located at North Oak Park. The camp is open to children ages 6-13 for a $10
fee. Participants are asked to bring their own bat and glove and will receive a certificate
at the conclusion of the camp.
The Lionettes, Southeastern's dance team, will host a dance camp for children
ages 5-12 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building.
The camp's $15 fee includes refreshments. Participants are asked to dress comfortably
and wear tennis shoes. The camp will conclude with a performance by participants in
the Student Union at noon for parents and other Rock 'n Roar guests.

and payment is mandatory for all camps by March 21. Space is limited, so reservations
should be made early.
Rock 'n Roar will also feature a variety of children's games, activities and
guest performances.
Rock 'n Roar patrons of all ages can also enjoy educational displays by Southeastern's
departments; food and music; a ceramics sale; a health fair; and more.

Music instructor to perform clarinet recital
Jackie McIlwain, Southeastern lecturer of clarinet, will perform a recital on Wednesday,
March 20. The free performance is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Pottle Auditorium.
Performing with McIlwain on piano will be University of Southern Mississippi
music educator and accompanist Eun-Hee Park. The program includes works by Rabaud,
Sierra and a Sonata for clarinet and piano by Francis Poulenc.
McIlwain joined the Southeastern faculty in August. She is also an adjunct professor
at the University of Southern Mississippi. McIlwain has played with the Mississippi
Symphony Orchestra, Meridian Symphony Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and
Murfreesboro Philharmonic Orchestra in Tennessee, among others. Her doctoral research
at Florida State University focused on musicians' injuries, covering causes, diagnosis,
prevention and treatment.

This Week in Athletics
The Southeastern men’s basketball team will compete in the Southland Conference Tournament,
while the baseball, softball, tennis and track teams will all be in action during
this week in Southeastern Athletics.
The Lions (12-17, 10-8 SLC) will be the fourth seed in the tournament, which
runs Wednesday through Sunday at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. As a top four
seed, Southeastern receives a bye into Thursday’s quarterfinals and will face the
winner of the first round contest between No. 5 Nicholls State and No. 8 McNeese State
at 5 p.m. Should the Lions advance, top seed Stephen F. Austin awaits for a 5 p.m.
contest on Friday in the semifinals. The semifinal winners will meet in Saturday’s
7:30 p.m. championship game with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
The baseball team (10-5) has its second consecutive week with five games on tap.
On Tuesday, the Lions host Tulane at 6 p.m. before heading to New Orleans on Wednesday
to face the Green Wave at 6:30 p.m. Arkansas-Pine Bluff visits Hammond for a three-game
series, which opens with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday. The series continues with a 2
p.m. contest on Saturday, before wrapping up on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Lions will look to Pack the Pat for Tuesday’s game versus in-state rival
Tulane, as fans are encourage to wear gold and will have the opportunity to enjoy
fireworks throughout the game. Southeastern students will receive free t-shirts and
food from Raising Cane’s while available.
Several promotions will also be held in conjunction with the series versus UAPB.
Friday will be $5 Friday, as a select food item and non-alcoholic beverage will be
available for just $5. Saturday, we’ll be playing Bingo at the Ballpark, as 20 fans
will walk away with prizes courtesy of Southeastern Athletics. Sunday is Academy Family
Sunday in the Park, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors. Children ages 12 and
under can enjoy Roomie’s Kid Zone and will have the opportunity to join the Lions
on the field for the national anthem. After the game, kids can run the bases and receive
autographs from the Lion baseball team.
Fresh off taking two of three from preseason league favorite Sam Houston State
to open Southland Conference play, the softball team (13-7, 2-1 Southland) will hit
the road for four games this week. On Wednesday, the Lady Lions face Southern at 4
p.m. in Baton Rouge. Southeastern opens its league road schedule on Saturday with
a 1 p.m. doubleheader at new league member Houston Baptist. Sunday’s series finale
is set for 2 p.m.
The undefeated Southeastern tennis team (11-0, 2-0 Southland) will open a season-long
eight-match home stand with four matches this week at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
On Tuesday, the Lions host Youngstown State at 4 p.m., before welcoming nationally-ranked
Virginia Tech to town for a 6 p.m. match on Wednesday. Students will receive free
pizza as available at Wednesday’s match.
Over the weekend, it’s back to Southland play for Southeastern. On Saturday,
the Lions host McNeese State, before Lamar comes to town on Sunday. First serve for
both matches is set for 12 p.m.
Fresh off a second place finish at the McNeese Cowboy Relays, the Southeastern
track and field teams will continue outdoor competition this week. The Lions and Lady
Lions will be in Lafayette on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Louisiana Classics.
All of this week’s basketball action and Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday’s
baseball games will be broadcast in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and LionSports.net.
Should the Lion basketball team be eliminated from the Southland Conference Tournament
on Thursday, Friday’s baseball game will also be broadcast on KSLU.
A live video stream of Thursday’s basketball tournament game will be available
at Southland.org, while Friday’s semifinals air on ESPN3. Saturday’s Southland Tournament
final will be televised on ESPN2. LionVision subscribers will have access to a live
video feed of all four home baseball games this week.

Professional activities
Harry S. Laver (History and Political Science) has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach and conduct research at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, for the 2013-2014 academic year.
William B. Robison (History and Political Science) delivered a lecture entitled "Anne Boleyn: A Hundred Years of Film and Television" at the Westside Regional Library in Alexandria on Sunday, March 3, as the first installment of the 2013 Cavanaugh Lecture Series sponsored by LSU-A. The series is named after Dr. Robert Cavanaugh, the retired immediate past Chancellor of the university and administered through the Department of Arts, English, and Humanities. This particular lecture was co-sponsored by the Rapides Parish Library. Robison also provided the visual accompaniment (images and film clips) for a lecture on "Women in Civil War Films" by Louisiana actress Faith Ford (best known for her role on CBS Television's Murphy Brown) on Thursday, March 7, at Louisiana College's Guinn Auditorium in Pineville. The lecture was sponsored by the Civil War Roundtable of Central Louisiana and arranged by the organization's president and program director, Richard H. Holloway.
Several accounting faculty members from the Department of Accounting and Finance presented papers at the annual meeting of the American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences held in Las Vegas Feb. 21-24. Dr. Harold E. Davis presented a paper titled "Identifying the Landscape of Mobile Payment Technologies;" Dr. Joseph Morris presented a paper titled "The FASB/IASB Joint Project on Leases: The Coming Changes to Lease Accounting;" Dr. Rick Simpson presented a paper titled "Broker Cost-Basis Reporting: What it Does, What it Does Not Do and Are We on Schedule?;" and Dr. Pierre Titard presented a paper co-authored with James DeFranceschi and Eric Knight titled "Do Computerized On-Line Homework Assignments Improve Exam Scores."
Dr. Kenneth Boulton (Fine and Performing Arts) collaborated with violinist Sylvia Ahramjian and cellist Ovidiu Marinescu (both of West Chester University in Pennsylvania) in three performances with the Nashville Ballet Feb. 15-17 of Sarah Slipper's Ploughing the Dark, set to music by Vanderbilt University composer Michael Kurek.
Dr. Luanne Billingsley (Graduate School of Nursing) recently presented "Using Avatars in an Online Virtual Community to Facilitate Peer Storytelling Among Grieving Oncology Nurses" at the 2013 Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS) in Little Rock, AK. This presentation disseminated results to research study questions: 1. How do oncology nurses express grief surrounding patients' deaths through peer storytelling in Second Life (an Internet-accessed 3D virtual multi-user virtual environment)? 2. Do oncology nurses report a benefit of using Second Life in dealing with grief related to patients' deaths? Dr. Billingsley was also invited to participate in a panel discussion during the SNRS Doctoral Pre-Conference to examine collaborations and partnerships among nurse scientists (PhD) and advanced practice nurses (DNP) in a variety of settings.
