Champagne Bingo a success
The FE-Lions alumni chapter's Champagne Bingo Saturday at Twelve Oaks was a blast
for a good cause. Approximately 520 women attended the fundraiser, which raised over
$30,000 for the Southeastern athletics program. Attendees enjoyed bingo games, raffles,
live and silent auctions, door prizes and much more.
"This was another record event for us," said Alumni Director Kathy Pittman. "Everyone
had a great time. We really appreciate the campus and community's support of this
fun fundraiser."

Cast chosen for Southeastern Opera Workshop's "Fairy Tales"
Southeastern's Opera/Music Theatre Workshop will present two classic Fairy tales, "Hansel & Gretel" and "Cendrillon" – better known as Cinderella – Feb. 7 and 8 in the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. nightly.
Tickets are $21 for adults, $16 for seniors, Southeastern faculty/staff and non-Southeastern students, and $4 for children 12 and younger. Southeastern students are admitted free of charge with their university ID.
Opera Workshop welcomes guest stage director Rachel M. Harris.
"Rachel has been directing operas for me since 2008," said Chuck Effler, director of Opera/Music Theatre Workshop. "Several years ago she told me about a version of the Cinderella story by French 19th century composer Pauline Viardot; she had translated about two-thirds of it and staged it as a project when she was working on her doctorate. I knew of Viardot slightly -- I had played several of her songs when accompanying vocal students, and I found her music quite charming. The problem with the piece, however, was that it was too short to fill an evening, and it was written for piano, not for orchestra."
Effler said he decided to pair another fairy tale opera, the famous Humperdinck "Hansel and Gretel" with 'Cendrillon' and write orchestrations for it himself.
"So this production of Viardot's 'Cendrillon' is the premier performance of Rachel's complete translation of the opera and of my orchestrations," he said.
Lead cast in the production of "Hansel and Gretal" are Allison Joiner, Hammond, as Hansel; Kim Dupre, Luling, as Gretel; Brent Alan Goodrich, Sulphur, as Father; and Sarah Bertrand, Covington, as Mother.
Joining them are Mindy Guidroz, Houma, and Amanda Lucas, Albany, as Sandman, the Sleep Fairy; Katherine Smith, Slidell, as Dewman, the Dew Fairy; Fiona Allen, Jackson, and Chase Ledet, Shriever, as Gingerbread Witch; and Olivia Lowentritt, Hammond, as Ginderbread Child.
Cast as Churus of Echos are Allen, Bertrand, Guidroz, Lucas, Kayla Blanchard of Lafayette, BriAnna Dewar of Slidell, Anastasiia Ped, Kherson, Ukraine, Smith, and Kristina Templeof Amite.

Effler will serve as vocal coach and conductor, while Department of Fine and Performing Arts faculty and staff members Steve Schepker (set design), Cody Stockstill (costume design), and Ellen Sovkoplas (lighting design) are providing their expertise to the production.

Southeastern student earns scholarships from horticulture groups
A Southeastern student has been selected to receive two scholarships in the area of
horticulture.
Ashley Edwards, a plant science major from Ponchatoula, has been awarded a $500
scholarship from the Hammond Garden Club and a $1,000 scholarship from the Louisiana
Nursery and Landscape Association.
The Hammond Garden Club made its decision based on financial need, scholarship
and enrollment in a plant science study. Edwards was awarded the scholarship in December.
"Ashley competed against students from LSU, Louisiana Tech, and ULL for the Louisiana
Nursery and Landscape Association," said instructor Sid Guedry. "The scholarship was
for a student who had achieved a high grade point average, had an interest in horticulture
and was enrolled in a plant science study at a Louisiana university."
Edwards received the Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Association scholarship
at its annual meeting held at the GulfSouth Horticultural Expo in Mobile, Ala., earlier
this month.

Southeastern cheer, dance teams each bring home silver and bronze
The Southeastern cheer and dance squads are each bringing home silver and bronze medals from the 2013 UCA/UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships, which wrapped up Sunday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Competing in the Small Coed Division I (NCAA I – FCS) category, the Southeastern cheerleaders marked their second-consecutive entrance into the finals in the enviable position of first place. Settling for third nationally Saturday behind Hofstra and Bowling Green State, the squad received an invitation to compete in Sunday's World University Cheerleading Championships.
Coached by Wayne New, Megan Guedry and Codi Amadeo, Southeastern placed second in the World Championship competition behind Bowling Green State.
The Lionettes, Southeastern's dance team, placed second in the Hip Hop competition and third in Jazz dance. Coached by Paige Lapeyrouse, the Lionettes improved their final ranking in both events over their 2012 finish.
Southeastern finished behind Hofstra in the Hip Hop competition and behind Cal State Fullerton and Hofstra in the Jazz finals.

Southeastern Faculty Exhibit runs trough Feb. 25
Members of the Southeastern art faculty will exhibit their work throughout February
in the annual Faculty Exhibition at the university's Contemporary Art Center in East
Strawberry Stadium.
The exhibit starts Jan. 31 with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. and features
various works and styles of art contributed by members of the faculty of the Department
of Fine and Performing Arts.
The styles of art in the exhibit vary from thought-provoking paintings and photography
to sculptures and pottery.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through
Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Feb. 18 is final day for Southeastern students to apply for spring 2013 graduation
The final day for Southeastern students to apply to graduate in spring 2013 is Feb.
18.
The graduation application and payment deadlines will be strictly enforced.
Candidates for associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees can apply
for graduation by logging into their LeoNet campus accounts and choosing the "Self
Service, Degree Progress/Graduation, Apply for Graduation" option. Instructions are
available on the "Current Students" link at www.southeastern.edu; then click on "Graduation Information – Apply for Graduation" or call Southeastern's
Office of the Registrar at 549-2066.
The $35 application fee should be paid directly to the Controller's Office, located
on North Campus in the Financial Aid Building.
Spring commencement exercises are scheduled for Saturday, May 18, at the University
Center.
Southeastern offering ExCEL scholarships to high school students
Southeastern is offering $4,000 scholarships to Louisiana high school students.
Called ExCEL, which stands for "excellence in commitment to education and leadership,"
the scholarships will be awarded to 20 students to be selected from more than 100
nominees. Applications were sent to every high school in the state of Louisiana during
the month of December.
"We are looking for students who demonstrate excellence in both academic and
extracurricular activities during their high school careers," said Cherie Kay Thriffiley,
director of the Office for Student Engagement. "Students should contact their high
school counselors for an application."
Thriffiley said applications are also available at southeastern.edu/excel_scholarships.
Completed applications are due to the Office for Student Engagement by Feb. 22.

Community singers invited to join Northshore Choral Society
Singers from the campus and community are invited to join the Southeastern Chorus
and Northshore Choral Society.
Choral singing at Southeastern is enjoyed by music majors and non-majors alike
in a variety of different ensembles.
The Northshore Choral Society and University Chorus are non-auditioned ensembles
comprised of university students and community members. With more than 100 singers
from majors throughout the university and a cross section of the community, these
ensembles regularly perform major works with a professional orchestra and soloists.
Past repertoires have included such choral works as "Mozart's Requiem" and "Mass in
C minor," Fauré's "Requiem," Orff's "Carmina Burana," Schubert's "Mass in G," and
Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms," in addition to many other masterworks.
"The choirs allow members to experience diverse music as a group at very high
standards and to use this music as a vehicle of expression. Anyone who loves to sing
should join us," said Director of Choral Activities Alissa Mercurio Rowe. "Rehearsals
are fun, invigorating and educational."
The ensemble meets each Tuesday night in the choir room of the Pottle Music Annex
during the semester from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Rowe said the groups will join Southeastern's Concert Choir and Women's Chorale
in a glorious concert of choral music by Johannes Brahms, scheduled to take place
Tuesday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Anthony Sears and Rowe will be featured conductors for the concert.

Instant Piano for Busy People (Feb. 6, 5:30 to 9 p.m.)
Spend one enjoyable evening learning the secrets of piano playing and discover how playing the piano can add music and enjoyment to life. Students will learn all the chords needed to play any song, any style, and any key. This workshop is for the absolute beginner, focusing on chord piano techniques, not note memorization. The cost is $55. A $25 book (fee paid to the instructor) will be provided, along with a 68 minute practice CD.
Introduction to Judo (Thursdays, Feb. 7 - 28, 8 to 9 p.m.)
The word Judo is an original Japanese word meaning "gentle (flexible) way," and indicates a way of life. It is more than a martial art; it is an integration of art, discipline, fitness activity, self-defense and sport. The basic and most important concept of Judo is "By wisely utilizing the opponent's power, a smaller person can defeat a larger person." In this course the basics of Judo technique and theory will be instructed. Related Japanese culture will also be introduced (as well as physics, if you are interested). The instructor is a third-degree black belt Judoist with over 40 years of experience, and a professor of physics. He is originally from Tokyo, Japan, and his degree has been awarded by Kodo-kan. He is also a scholar as Dr. Kano, the founder of Judo and Kodo-kan. There is no prerequisite for this course. The cost is $60.
Guitar for Beginners (Mondays, Feb. 18 – March 25, 7 to 8 p.m.)
This course includes chords, strumming patters, and note reading. Participants must be 13 years old or older and have their own playable instrument. The cost is $50 with a $21.75 material fee paid to the instructor.
Financial Strategies for Retirement (Tuesdays, Feb. 19 – March 5, 6 to 8 p.m.)
This class covers important money management concepts and issues that are important to people at or near retirement. Topics include: how to reduce pressures on your retirement income; how to make appropriate health care decisions; where you will live and how you will pay for your health care. By condensing up-to-date financial information into three classroom sessions, the Financial Strategies for Successful Retirement Seminar gives you the answers you need. This cost is $49. Your spouse can also attend for no additional charge.
How Money Works: Financial Success on a Teacher's Salary Basics (Feb. 19, 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.)
Are you an educator or future educator ready to take control of your financial success? In part I of How Money Works, you will learn the relationship between time, savings and debt. Financial success on a teacher salary can happen if you take charge. This workshop is free.
Introduction to Welding (Wednesdays, Feb. 20 – March 13, 6 to 9 p.m.)
If you are interested in learning hands-on welding, this course will provide you with an introduction to safety and the setup of oxyfuel and SMAW (stick) equipment. Students will work in the flat position using plain carbon steel. Also included will be an introduction to GMAW. The cost is $350.
Microsoft Excel Learning Series: Introduction to Excel (Feb. 25 & Feb. 27, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.)
This course is designed for individuals who have little or no experience with Microsoft Excel. Excel is an important tool for almost any business environment. Students will learn to create a file, enter data, create formulas, navigate spreadsheets, and understand the basic components of the Excel environment. Students will also learn format, edit, and save documents. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion. The cost is $120.

Introduction to Videography (Mondays & Wednesdays, Feb. 25 – March 6, 6 to 9 p.m.)
This introduction course will feature the process of recording moving images with video cameras and the principles of effective lighting techniques. Students will learn the fundamentals of composing shots for particular purposes, as well as how to properly light the subject in order to obtain the desired result. Students will also learn how to utilize basic camera functions and how to prepare video for post-production. Basic audio principles will also be covered. The cost is $150.

This Week in Athletics
The Southeastern women's tennis team will open the spring portion of its schedule,
while the basketball and track teams will also be in action during this week in Southeastern
Athletics.
The Lions will look to build on an excellent fall, as five newcomers have mixed
with a solid veteran corps to give Southeastern head tennis coach Jason Hayes high
hopes heading into 2013.
Southeastern will open the spring on Friday with a 1 p.m. match at Jackson State.
On Saturday, the Lions face Louisiana Tech at 12 p.m. in Ruston.
The Southeastern basketball teams will hit the road for a pair of Southland Conference
doubleheaders. The Lions (7-11, 5-3 Southland) and the Lady Lions (8-11, 1-7 Southland)
will start the week in Conway, Ark. to face Central Arkansas in a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader.
Saturday's doubleheader at Oral Roberts also tips off at 5:30 p.m.
The games between Southeastern and Central Arkansas will air live on ESPN3. All
of this week's basketball action will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM
(90.9) and LionSports.net.
The Southeastern men's and women's track and field teams will continue the indoor
season this week. The Lions and Lady Lions will be in Lake Charles on Friday to compete
in the McNeese Indoor II meet.

C. Roy Blackwood (Columbia Theatre/Fanfare) attended the APAP (American Performing Arts Presenters)
booking conference Jan. 11-15 in New York City. Talent for the 2013/14 season was
reviewed and time was spent with booking agents. "Many exciting prospects are out
there if money can be raised to bring them to Columbia Theatre," Blackwood said.
Dr. Dan Hollander and Dr. Linda Synovitz co-authored a research project titled "Relationship between body satisfaction and
obesity category by grade, gender and ethnicity of low income Southeastern Louisiana
elementary school children." Dr. Synovitz gave the oral presentation of research results
at the 4th International Conference on the Health Risks of Youth Jan. 2 in Costa Rica.
Harry S. Laver (History and Political Science) recently published a new book, A General Who Will Fight: The Leadership of Ulysses S. Grant, with the University Press of Kentucky. A leadership biography of the Civil War
commander, A General Who Will Fight was selected for the Book-of-the-Month Club, the History Book Club, and the Military
History Book Club.
Dr. Hye-Young Kim (Physics) has published an article titled "Van der Waals interactions: Accuracy of
pair potential approximations," in the Journal of Chemical Physics, Vol.137, 194316 (2012) in collaboration with researchers at Penn State University
and Johannes Kepler Universitaet Linz (Austria).
Lt. Patrick Gipson (University Police Department) was the opening speaker at the Baton Rouge Community
Stalking Workshop held on the campus of LSU on Saturday, Jan. 26. Lt Gipson presented
a session entitled "It's All in the Context" detailing stalking, its impact on victims,
and methods for addressing stalking behaviors in the community.
