Overview of the program


The purpose of the Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Promotion program is to prepare health education and promotion specialists who will have the skills and competencies to exhibit leadership in developing effective health education and promotion programs throughout the state.  With such skills, graduates can make major contributions in improving the health of individuals and communities in Louisiana and beyond.

 

The goals of the degree program are to prepare professional who will be able to:

 

  • Meet the health promotion needs of community and public health agencies in Louisiana

  • Meet the health promotion needs of large and small worksites/corporations in Louisiana

  • Complete and pass the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) national examination which is offered through the National Community for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.

  • Be more competitive in acquiring health education/promotion jobs whether in Louisiana or out of state

    Strengths of the program


    Southeastern Louisiana University is the only university in Louisiana to offer an undergraduate degree in health education and promotion. The health education and promotion program provides students an opportunity to work with nationally known faculty, participate in student research, and develop the prerequisite skills necessary to become a Certified Health Education Specialist.

    • Seek membership in professional organizations, such as: American School Health Association, American Alliance for Physical, Health Education, Recreation, and Dance, and Louisiana for Physical, Health Education, Recreation, and Dance
    • Participate in research opportunities
