Overview of the program


Southeastern offers a nationally accredited Athletic Training Education Program. The program, accredited in October 2002, was the first in the state of Louisiana to receive such accreditation. The program is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). It is a selective admission program that requires students to participate in a formal application process after completing three semesters of coursework and maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The number of students selected each year is according to the number of clinical opportunities available. The Athletic Training Education Program is designed to provide a comprehensive, progressive educational and clinical foundation to prepare the student for a career in athletic training. As a result of their exposure to and participation in the didactic and clinical education program, each student shall develop competency in the following domains of athletic training:

  • Prevention and risk management
  • Recognition, evaluation, and assessment 
  • Immediate care 
  • Treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning 
  • Organization and administration 
  • Professional development and responsibility

Preparing for a job in the program


Students hoping to pursue a career in athletic training should: 

  • Develop good communication, interpersonal and decision making skills

  • Seek membership in professional organizations, such as Louisiana Athletic Trainers Association, and National Athletic Trainers Association. 
  • Participate in research and presentation opportunities. 
  • Develop leadership skills through participation in school, state, and national organizations. 
  • Value diversity.


Careers in the program


A student who completed an accredited degree program in athletic training is eligible to take the national athletic training board of certification exam. Upon passing this exam, graduates may seek employment in one of the following areas: 

  • Clinics 
  • High Schools 
  • Physician’s offices 
  • Professional sports 
  • Industrial and corporate venues 
  • College and university Athletics 
  • International sports 
  • Athletic training education
  • Military
