Overview of the program
Our Master of Arts in Psychology degree program is designed to provide students with the core training in psychology that would enable them to successfully enter a Ph.D. program as a third year graduate student. The generalist training offered by our program is equally suited for those interested in basic or applied areas of psychology. In addition, an Industrial/Organizational track is being planned for the future.
Strengths of the program
The program has a strong research emphasis and offers core courses in psychology that are often easily transferred to a doctoral program. The Department of Psychology faculty are currently pursuing research in the following areas:
- Eating disorders
- Social and group processes
- Distinctiveness and memory
- Evolutionary psychology
- Parenting styles
- Child Development
- Violence exposure effects on children
- Industrial / Organizational Psychology
Preparing for a job in the program
Students desiring a career as a psychologist will need to complete a doctoral degree in addition to a master's degree. Southeastern's Master of Arts in Psychology degree program prepares graduates for successful entry to a Ph.D. program. In addition, the program prepares students for various positions in the mental health or related fields that require a master's degree.
Starting Salaries after completing the program (estimates only)
Most master's graduates go on to doctoral studies; when they complete the doctoral program, they can expect salaries in the mid-fifties. Students entering the job market at the master's level can expect an average starting salary in the mid-thirties.
