Overview of the program
This interdisciplinary program combines traditional arts, humanities, and social sciences subjects with extensive courses in business to prepare students for managing reservations and commemorative areas, archaeological sites, museums, artistic troupes and companies, resorts, corporate collections, landholdings of historical and cultural significance, and designated historical districts. Areas of study include:
Strengths of the program
Uniquely situated at the undergraduate level, the Cultural Resource Managment Program prepares students for management positions in cultural entities such as not-for-profits as well as in the commercial world. Studies in grant writing, museolgy, art management, and historic preservation prepare students for a summer internship with a cooperating agency of their choice in the real world prior to their senior year of study.
Preparing for a job in the program
Students complete the equivalent of a minor in business with courses in accounting, management, marketing, and finance, providing essential tools for jobs in the workforce. Additionally, students complete an eight semester internship in a field of their choice during the last summer prior to graduation.
Careers in the program
From small community museums to corporate giants such as the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Louisiana Arts and Sciences Museum, the core of the Cultural Resource Management Program is management and job placement. Students typically are employed by municipal state agencies, with some functioning as independent agents.
Starting Salaries after completing the program (estimates only)
Starting salaries begin at $25,000 and up.
Campus organizations and activities affiliated with the program
Each area of study in the major represents a department on campus, each with student organizations and activities. Additionally, cultural activities such as Fanfare, the Universitiy's celebration of the arts and culture in October each year, and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum's Annual Wooden Boat Festival provide opportunities for student involvement. Special projects planned each year provide additional opportunities.
