Excellence in Faculty Service
William Bond
Professor of Biological Sciences
William “Billy” Bond is one of Southeastern’s longest serving faculty members. Whether he is identifying plant diseases or helping search for a new coach, he has managed to juggle academics and service at Southeastern for 38 years.
Bond’s roots at Southeastern run deep. “My whole
family has been associated with Southeastern,” he says.
“My wife and three children also graduated from here, and my
wife is on the faculty.”
Bond and his wife Emily, a professor in nursing and now
director of Sponsored Research and Programs, have started an
endowed scholarship in athletics to be awarded to an athlete
majoring in either biology or nursing.
In addition to his almost four decades of dedication in the
classroom, Bond also has served for 28 years on the Faculty
Athletic Committee.
He chaired the group for the last 16 year, helping in
recommending policies regarding intercollegiate athletics. In
addition, he has served as Southeastern’s NCAA faculty
athletic representative for the past 13 years, and has played a key
role on search committees for new coaches.
“One gains a great appreciation of the challenges
administration and athletic directors have in funding
athletics,” says Bond. “Also, you meet outstanding
student athletes, coaches and athletic administrators. You come to
appreciate the student athlete the time he or she spends in
sports and the challenges of balancing the devotion to a sport and
to academics.”
