“I found a place at Southeastern”
Aron Walker III of New Orleans wanted to get away from home for his college experience … but not too far away. The New Orleans native and St. Augustine High School graduate enrolled at Southeastern, a somewhat familiar location since his family came from the Hammond area and his dad was a graduate of the university’s business administration program.
“I was attracted to the sense of closeness that Southeastern is known for,” Aron says. Southeastern is not as large as a lot of state schools, and you get to know a lot of people. It’s like a close-knit family or community.”
Aron found a niche at Southeastern, joining Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, for which he now serves as president. “My dad was a member of the fraternity; I like the example they set for young men,” he says/
A junior studying management, Aron served as a Student Government Association senator, and as chairman of the SGA Appropriations Committee. He now serves as vice president of the organization, where he is working to help make other students aware of the SGA’s important role as primary advocate for students.
Aron is also coordinator of Project PULL, a mentoring program for minority students. PULL – “Promoting Unity through Leadership and Learning” – is a program offered through the Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs to enhance the experiences of freshmen with a goal of increasing student retention.
“Many minority students, especially African American males, have a relatively high college drop-out rate,” Aron says. “Many come to college not knowing anyone, so they need some guidance. Project PULL provides them with a mentor, someone they can lean on in that first year. It’s a great experience.”
