CENTRAL COMPUTER EQUIPMENT: Southeastern's hardware configuration supports the mission-critical applications important to Southeastern. We have completed an infrastructure upgrade in an effort to reach our strategic goal to possess a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure. In the event of a disaster that incapacitates the data center, core administrative and academic applications can quickly be moved to back up systems at our Business Continuity Center.
ADMINISTRATIVE COMPUTING SYSTEMS: Southeastern is in the process of converting its legacy computer system to a Windows and web-based system revolutionizing the way the university does business.
NETWORK UPGRADE: Significant network upgrades and additions are continually taking place. All inter-building links now run at high speeds. Older fiber is being replaced with redundant connections to the core network. The new dorms have doubled the size of the Southeastern network. As a result, the University has added additional Internet capacity.
WIRELESS NETWORK: Available to all Southeastern students, faculty, and staff. Visitors and guests may also have access. Our wireless network provides all the conveniences of a regular wired connection without the need for cables. To find out more about our wireless network and the growing number of hot spots around campus, visit http://www.selu.edu/admin/technology/resources/wireless/index.html.
NETSTORAGE: A new service available to students, faculty and staff. It provides disk storage that is accessible from home, office, or anywhere you have access to the internet. For a tutorial on using NetStorage visit http://www.selu.edu/admin/technology/resources/wireless/index.html.
PERSONNEL COMPUTING: Approximately 3000 personal computers, 1700 printers and many other types of computer equipment support Personnel computing.
LEO - LINKING EFFICIENTLY ONLINE : is the name given to the overall project of converting our administrative systems, such as payroll and student records, from our "Legacy" system to a new Windows-based system supported by a relational database. Southeastern selected Oracle for the relational database support and PeopleSoft for the administrative system software. By clicking on the LEO icon on Southeastern’s main web page, you are taken directly to the LEO menu. Select LEO's “How Do I” link to answer your "How Do I" questions. By clicking on any of the subject headings in the menu column, you will be linked to your choice of easy to understand how-to directions for most LEO Administrative System topics such as how to enter the LEO system or entering grades and removing advising blocks.
THE COMPUTER HELP DESK 549-5555 - provides technical support. Phone assistance is provided for software and Internet questions. The Help Desk also takes service requests for hardware and software problems as well as telephone and network problems over the phone, in person at Room 111 McClimans Hall or by e-mail at helpdesk@selu.edu. Visit the Help Desk’s web page at www.selu.edu/hd for more information about their staff and services such as computer training classes.
NORTON ANTI-VIRUS: All computers on campus are protected by Norton Anti-Virus and automatic virus definition updates are currently being implemented.
E-MAIL: All faculty, students and staff now have access to e-mail, designed to improve the speed of communications both within and outside the campus environment. WebMail, our web-based mail client, provides access from any internet-connected computer around the world.
CENTER FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE: The Center for Faculty Excellence helps faculty assess and incorporate technology in their teaching through workshops, seminars, and individualized training. The Center offers software support ranging from basic office applications to graphics and video editing programs, as well as a variety of equipment including scanners, color printers, and digital cameras. The knowledge and skills faculty gain through the Center are transformed into tools and strategies that enhance both traditional and distance learning environments.
ELECTRONIC CLASSROOMS AND E-CAMPUS: A number of classrooms on and off campus have been equipped to handle e-learning activities, allowing faculty in many departments the use of computers and related peripherals to aid students in the learning process. As a member of the Board of Regents audiovisual network for research, Southeastern utilizes on-campus compressed video classrooms to connect to other BOR universities and to remote Southeastern campuses in Covington and Baton Rouge. Further expanding the list of e-learning activities is the number of online classes offered, such as Algebra, English, Introduction to Sociology or Music, Computer Literacy, Elementary Statistics, Telecommunications and graduate courses in education and business, among others. In the Spring 2005 semester, 1952 students enrolled in 115 Internet courses.
LINUS A. SIMS MEMORIAL LIBRARY: Sims Library utilizes a variety of technologies to deliver services and resources to the students and faculty of Southeastern. Through membership in LOUIS, a state-wide consortium of academic libraries, the Library's online catalogue, electronic indexes, full-text databases, and an electronic reserves system are made available on the 100 plus computers available throughout the building. In addition, most electronic indexes and full-text databases are available from off-campus sites. A computer lab, partially funded by the Student Technology Fee, provides access to a variety of application software packages. Internet access is available throughout the Library. A lab/classroom is utilized to allow hands-on experience for students enrolled in the Library's credit course teaching information literacy skills. Many of the Library's operations are handled through a statewide automated library system, SIRSI Unicorn, operated by the LOUIS office at Louisiana State University. Interlibrary Loan transactions are facilitated through use of the OCLC Interlibrary Loan electronic system and Ariel software for timely delivery of articles. The Library's webpage provides links to resources and services, with online forms available for a variety of service requests.
STUDENT TECHNOLOGY FEE RESOURCES: Thanks to the Student Technology Fee, new computers and computer labs staffed with student workers to provide assistance with technology are available for students in numerous locations across campus. Check out the website to see what Student Technology Fee dollars have purchased to benefit our students.
COMPUTER LABS: Southeastern now has fifty-five state-of-the-art computer labs available to train, assist, and serve all Southeastern students with technology in a positive environment; thus providing a value-added component to enhance their academic achievements and workforce preparation. The equipment in these labs include multi-media PCs, zip drives, printers, scanners, Read Only and Read/Write CD ROMS, LCD panels and Macs. Open labs, available to all students and majors are available in Fayard Hall, North Campus Main Building and Sims Library. Southeastern has a total of 1453 computers available for student use.
