A Message from the President

April 16, 2010 - Budget update to faculty and staff

As you probably have heard or read by now, Governor Jindal announced a plan today that will allow the State to address a $319 million additional budget shortfall in the current fiscal year while avoiding additional furloughs and layoffs of personnel. We appreciate the efforts of Governor Jindal and other State leaders that would allow higher education to make up its part of the shortfall through savings from current hiring and spending freezes. The plan to address the shortfall must still be approved by the Legislature.

The Governor's plan includes $29.5 million in savings from higher education with $14.2 million of that amount attributed to the University of Louisiana System. Southeastern's share is $1.825 million. Based on this information, we have no immediate plans for additional layoffs or furloughs and will address the reduction through savings attributed to personnel attrition and the previously enacted spending freeze.

As always, I will provide additional updates as further budget details become available.

John Crain, President
