How can I find out what jobs are open?
The first step is to read the advertisement carefully. Most classified positions will require years of experience and/or a Civil Service test. If you meet the qualifications, you can apply directly to the SLU Human Resources Office using the SF-10 Civil Service job application and the SLU preemployment application. Both forms are required. Applicants must have the required test scores and/or required years of experience prior to applying. Most positions also require a valid Louisiana driver’s license.
I applied in the past, can you just pull my application and make a copy?
No, since we need an original signature and date. We recommend that applicants make one good original of the SF-10 Civil Service job application, leaving the signature, date and position applied for blank and then make copies of it as needed. You can even download the application and save it to your hard drive, printing copies as needed. You have to apply for each position separately, listing the job order number of the position you are applying for on each application.
If I apply for one job in one department and then another with the same title comes open in another department, do I have to reapply?
Yes. You must submit a new application for each position that comes open.
How do I find out about testing?
There are several Civil Service tests available and more information about testing can be found on the Civil Service Main Page. The SLU Human Resources Office staff is also available to answer questions about testing.
Will an advertised temporary appointment ever become permanent?
Not usually. Most job appointments are for grant funded positions and are temporary in nature. A person employed in a job appointment cannot work more than three years on the job appointment.
If SLU always offers the minimum of the salary range, then why is the entire range advertised?
Civil Service sets the salary ranges for all classified positions. SLU will always offer the minimum of the salary range unless the candidate has reemployment eligibility, meaning they were previously employed in a Classified Louisiana state job as a permanent employee within the past ten years. If funding is available, we will offer a candidate with reemployment eligibility the salary they were at when they left Classified state service, after that Classified state service has been verified, and if it’s within the range of the new position.
A job appointment is a temporary position that can last no longer than three years.
When an advertised position requires an “eligible” score, this means the applicant must first become certified as “eligible” through the department of Civil Service before applying to SLU. The applicant should submit a SF-10 Civil Service job application directly to Civil Service, including all of their education and work experience. Civil Service will determine if the candidate meets the minimum qualifications and if so, issue the “eligible” score. At that point, the candidate can then submit an application directly to SLU if the position is still open and advertised.
All positions at SLU are Monday through Friday, 7:45a.m. – 4:30p.m. unless otherwise specified in the advertisement.
Can I give you an application to keep on file?
Unfortunately, no. We only accept applications for positions that are open and advertised and from people who meet the minimum qualifications.
How far back do I have to go on my application?
We require that all work experience be listed on the application. Supplemental pages can be added for additional space. It is also recommended that applicants be as detailed as possible when listing their job duties on their application – that is all we and/or Civil Service has to go on when determining whether you meet the minimum qualifications.
Are the advertised jobs permanent?
Yes, unless otherwise specified in the advertisement. Job appointments and restricted appointments may be advertised as well, but will have a description of the terms of employment within the ad. Any employee hired into a "permanent" position serves a 6-24 month probational appointment.
Can I submit an electronic application through the Internet or email?
Usually no. We require a signature on the application and preemployment application. Applications can be hand-carried, faxed, or mailed. The only exception is an application that is scanned, showing a signature, and emailed as an attachment. All applications must be received prior to 4:30p.m. on the closing date.
I saw a job advertised last week, but now I don’t see it listed. Can I still apply for it?
No. All of our positions are advertised with a closing date. On that closing date, the department can choose to extend the advertisement or close it. Once closed, no more applications are accepted. We only accept applications for positions that are open and advertised.
