Scheduling An Appointment

Present a $10 paid receipt or your Lion’s Lagniappe card to the Health Center scheduling desk.

 

Prior to Your Visit.

Complete the Women’s Health History Form at the link above and bring to your visit.

 

Pap smear:  additional costs

Take Charge Family Planning Waiver Program, $0.00. Current card is required at time of visit. If your benefits are not up-to-date, the lab will bill you personally at a higher cost.  Apply online.  See link below!

Less than 30 years old, $25.00.

30 years of age or older, $70.00. The price difference reflects the cost of the special PAP test  based on current medical recommendations for women of this age group.

 

Abnormal Pap smears, incurs an additional $53.00 physician over-read fee.  There is no way for us to know which PAPs will require this service ahead of time. If your PAP requires this, the Health Center will be notified by the lab, and we will notify you of your balance.

 

In preparation for you pelvic exam and/or PAP smear:

·         Do not douche or use vaginal creams 2 days before the test.

·         Do not have intercourse within 24 hours before the test.

·         The optimal time for appointment is 1 – 2 weeks after your menstrual cycle.

·         No active bleeding at the time of your exam. This can interfere with test results.

·         You may be asked to provide a urine specimen prior to your exam to test for any signs of infection and/or pregnancy.

·         If labs are required to assist with your diagnosis additional fees may be incurred.

 

Follow-up Appointments

There will be no charge for follow-ups if you are asked to return but ALL Follow-up appointments must be scheduled through the nurse in Women’s Health to avoid being charged.

 

Medication refill policy:

If your pharmacy sends us a refill request for contraceptives or other medication and your prescription is greater than 12 months old, you must make an appointment to see the practitioner again. Other refill requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis as necessary. The best thing you can do to ensure that you can get your medication is to schedule an appointment for before you run out. This clinic is only open 2 days a week and is closed for the summer. Please take this into account when scheduling your appointments.

 

Cancellations

If for any reason you cannot keep your appointment, please call the University Health Center within 24 hours of your scheduled time to avoid losing your $10.  Our number is 985-549-2242.

 

If you have an outstanding balance with the Health Center, you will have two weeks to take care of this before the Controller’s Office is instructed to block your account. You may make payments if unable to pay entire balance at once. 

 

 Services Offered:

 

• Annual Examination: includes health education, blood pressure, weight

  measurements, abdominal and pelvic exams, breast exam; pap smear (test for

  cervical cancer and precancer). All sexually active women should have yearly pap

  smears. Other laboratory and STD testing is completed as recommended by the

  Nurse Practitioner.  What is a PAP Smear or Pelvic Exam?

 

 

• If you think you may need an STD test, there will be a charge.  The cost can range from $10 to $100 for ONE test.  The best option is to have money on your I.D.  You can call the clinic for prices on specific tests. 

 

• Evaluation of menstrual irregularities

 

• Contraceptive counseling: abstinence, condoms, Depo-Provera injections, oral

   contraceptives, patch, etc. are prescribed as needed. The student is responsible for

   filling their prescription.

 

• Pregnancy testing, counseling, and referral for prenatal care


• Consultation, education regarding self breast exam


• Consultation, education regarding self testicular exam


• Consultation, education, testing  and treatment of STD’s


• Consultation regarding other women’s health issues  

 

Take Charge is a Louisiana Family Planning Waiver Service Program available to many women ages 19-44.  Take Charge provides 4 yearly physical exams and laboratory tests, contraceptive counseling, birth control products that require a prescription and sterilization procedures.

Dr. Barbara Hyde, our Board Certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner provides gynecological services twice a week at the University Health Center. Women’s health resource/educational material is available to all interested students. 

 

•The only acceptable method of payment at the University Health Center is your Lions Lagniappe (ID). All other forms of payment must be made at the University Controllers Office and bring us a receipt. Lab fees vary. If necessary, call for specific pricing.
