The Center for Faculty Excellence will offer professional development services through workshops, teleconferences, roundtables and infosessions on a variety of topics throughout the year. In addition to scheduled events, the Center staff is available for individual consultations and special sessions tailored for departmental needs. To view the list of training options, see our calendar.
Lyceum Lights
Join our series of faculty luncheon lectures designed to illuminate the common interests of faculty from diverse disciplines. These luncheon lectures are held monthly in Twelve Oaks. To view the current schedule, see our calendar.
Book Club
Each semester the Center sponsors a faculty book club. A different book is read each semester and faculty are invited to join by the start of a semester so the books, provided courtesy of the Center, can be ordered. The club meets several times during the semester, according to the schedules of its members, to discuss the book.
To join the book club, contact the Center at center@selu.edu Early registration is suggested since membership is limited.
Portfolio Fair
The Center hosts an annual Portfolio Fair each November. Sample portfolios are displayed and experienced faculty are present to discuss faculty issues on teaching, research and service. The Fair is open to all faculty and focuses on annual evaluations, 3rd year reviews, and the tenure/promotion process. For more information on creating a professional portfolio, click here.
Faculty Conference on Teaching, Research and Creativity
The Center for Faculty Excellence would like faculty to benefit from the teaching experience, knowledge and wisdom of colleagues. One such opportunity is our Faculty Conference on Teaching, Research and Creativity. Held each spring, the conference consists of faculty-led, interactive presentations or demonstrations open to all faculty. The purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for sharing the successful practices, projects, creative endeavors, and research of our faculty. The call for proposals to present at the conference is sent in early spring.
Faculty Fellows
“Support for faculty BY faculty!” The Center for Faculty Excellence is proud to announce three Faculty Fellows! The Faculty Fellow program is an attempt to increase the Center's support of issues faced by faculty both in and out of the classroom. These fellows have offered to work with the Center to provide support in a variety of areas. Watch for upcoming activities and events!
Dr. Michael Beauvais, Assistant Professor of Industrial Technology, will serve as a Faculty Fellow in Teaching. Mike has shared his dynamic approach in the classroom at various Center workshops. His passion and enthusiasm for teaching is contagious!
Dr. Cynthia B. Elliott, Professor of Education, has been recognized as a Faculty Fellow for her innovative teaching and leadership in promoting service-learning as pedagogy that links academic learning with community service.
Dr. Rick Miller, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, will be the Faculty Fellow for Research. Rick will coordinate the recently introduced PIERS program - The Peer Instrument for Enhancing Research Support. PIERS is a new program at the Center that provides a navigational instrument for research support during any and all steps of the research process.
New Faculty Orientation and Seminars
Each fall the Center for Faculty Excellence, in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, hosts a New Faculty Orientation. This orientation serves as both a welcome to our family and an introduction to the teaching culture at Southeastern. Activities provide interaction with both new and veteran faculty, specifics on campus policies, and answers to general questions such as “Who are Southeastern students?” and “What is expected in the classroom?” Follow-up sessions throughout the academic year allow for open exchange of ideas, suggestions, and questions about teaching and learning at Southeastern.
The Center for Faculty Excellence has developed an online version of the New Faculty Orientation in Blackboard and you are invited to attend.
Tuesday T Times!
The Center offers interactive discussions on select Tuesday afternoons during the semester. The goal of these sessions is to provide an informal opportunity for colleagues to share teaching ideas and mentor each other as we implement the ideas in our classrooms. To view the current schedule, see our calendar.
