Appointments are required for most of the services detailed in this section, and are scheduled for one hour. Call our office at (985) 549-2121 to schedule an appointment with a career counselor.
Resume & Cover Letter Assistance
The resume is the first impression the job seeker makes on an employer. Schedule an appointment with one of our career counselors for assistance with your resume and/or cover letter. To prepare your resume, review our resume assistance information, and bring a printed copy of your resume to your appointment. Information on references is also provided on our web site.
Walk-In Resume Review Hours
In lieu of a traditional hour-long appointment, take advantage of our Walk-In Resume Review Hours. A quick 5-10 minute review of your resume will be provided by our career counseling staff. You MUST bring a hard copy of your resume with you - please reference the resume assistance information to prepare. Click on the above link for the specific walk-in hours offered.
Email Resume Review Service
No time to come in for an appointment? Our Email Resume Review Service is convenient to your busy schedule. To prepare your resume, review our resume assistance information, and create/modify your resume following our format and content recommendations. Then email your resume to careercounseling@selu.edu and include “Resume Review” in the subject line. Our career counseling staff will conduct a general review of your resume and email you with suggestions. The wait time you will experience varies depending on demand – so don’t wait until the last minute to email your resume if you’re facing an application deadline! NOTE: Resumes will be returned with no critique if format and content guidelines are not met.
Career Exploration & Assessment
Career exploration and assessment includes the process of articulating your career strengths and goals and finding - or creating - opportunities that match what you want. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality inventory providing information on work related personality strengths, suitable work environments, on-the-job success insights, and a list of career possibilities. The COPS Interest Inventory measures interest in work activities to increase your awareness of possible career fields/industries. Counselors can enhance your job search strategies by assisting you in communicating your MBTI personality strengths on your resume and in the interview.
Career Information Resources
Online career information resources are available to provide factual information on 100's of careers to assist you in exploring your career possibilities. Access Career Exploration and Assessment to view SIGI 3, O*Net, OOH, and What Can I Do With This Major? See detailed job descriptions, education, training and skills requirements, salary information, and job market projections.
Interviewing Assistance
Don’t assume you can simply walk into an interview and answer a few questions. Ask any recruiter and they will tell you that preparation and practice are key to a successful interview. Meet with one of our career counselors and polish your interview skills by participating in a practice interview. Your counselor will provide you with feedback and tips for improvement.
Job Search Processes Assistance
The job search process can be daunting. You may not know how to begin, or where – or even how – to look. Discuss job search processes with our career counselors and get information on how to plan, organize and conduct a successful job search.
