1. As an employee of Southeastern, how does my department buy a computer for me to use?

The University currently has a Computer Replacement Plan in place for faculty and staff computers. Through this plan, faculty and staff receive a new computer every four years upon approval by the Department Head/Dean/Vice President.

If other technology is needed within a department in addition to a faculty or staff's primary computer Computer Equipment Resales can provide assistance with pricing for such technology equipment.

Computer Equipment Resales can be contacted by calling 549-2862 or by sending e-mail to resales@selu.edu

Questions regarding PC and laptop specifications and/or purchases should be directed to the Office of Technology at 549-2314 or by email to technology@selu.edu.

2. Where can students use computers on campus?

Various Open & Restricted Labs are available on campus for faculty, staff and student use.

3. How can I get a university e-mail account?

Faculty/Staff

An e-mail account for all new employees is automatically generated and takes the form of Wxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxx is the seven-digit employee identification number issued to you by Southeastern Human Resources.

An easier to remember FirstName.LastName@selu.edu is also generated automatically for new employees. The e-mail alias consists of the employee's first name dot employee's full last name. (e.g., John Smith's e-mail alias would be john.smith@selu.edu, unless there was already a JohnSmith alias in existence at Southeastern. Then the alias would be john.smith-2 or some other string of letters.)

Students

An e-mail account for all new students is automatically generated after they have paid fees. It takes the form of Wxxxxxxx, where xxxxxxx is the seven-digit employee identification number issued to you by Enrollment Services.
An alias consist of the full first name and full last name, separated by a period, is also generated.(e.g., Jane.Smith) Again, if there is already an alias Jane.Smith, the next Jane Smith would receive Jane.Smith-2

Move the mouse or tap the Shift key on your keyboard. Sometimes monitors are set to "go to sleep" after a certain amount of time if the image doesn't change.

Check to see that the power light on the front of the monitor is green. If not, your computer or your monitor may have lost power.

12. So you're getting a new PC!! What happens to the software on your old PC?

Following are some guidelines that the Help Desk follows when handling software installations and transfers.

If your old computer is being sent to Surplus, the software licenses can be transferred to the new computer. However, you may need to provide the Help Desk with the purchase order number where the software was initially purchased so a proper transfer can be made.

If your old computer is going to be used by someone else, new licenses should be purchased for the new computer and the old software should remain with the old computer.

If your software is out-of-date, it is recommended that the latest versions be purchased. Prices for software can be obtained from Computer Equipment Resales at X2862.
