Our Services
Following is a brief description of some of the services offered by the Writing Center.
Individual Conferencing
While the Writing Center provides individual conferences for English 101 and 102 students primarily, we provide conferencing opportunities for other students as well. During these conferences, users talk with trained writing consultants about their course papers, about useful strategies for generating ideas or for revising and editing their work, or about any number of other academic and personal writing needs.
Each conference is different, but here is a brief list of what users can expect:
- Half-hour sessions, with repeat appointments if needed
- Responsive readings and substantive discussions of work in progress
- Feedback on strengths—plus ideas for improving areas of weakness
- Practice using brainstorming and organizing techniques, plus other useful “start-up” strategies
- Demonstrations of efficient revising, editing, and proofreading strategies
- Help with grammar, punctuation, and documentation
It is important to understand that Center staff will not simply edit or proofread papers nor do we do the reading, thinking, or writing for students. Instead, our goal is to help writers do these things for themselves so they can become more efficient and more confident writers.
Online Services
The Writing Center provides online tutoring through BlackBoard for all English 101 and 102 students only. Students will have access to the following:
- Online submission of student papers available 24 hours a day
- Our entire collection of instructional handouts
- Online chats and discussion boards moderated by Writing Center staff
- Links to other online writing resources
Papers submitted online must be accompanied by an online consultation form. Responses to papers on Monday through Thursday will take 24 to 48 hours, while responses on Friday through Sunday will take 72 hours. Any students whose papers are not accepted will receive emails notifications. For more information, please log onto your BlackBoard account.
Confidentiality
With the exception of cases of suspected plagiarism or other violations of the University’s code of conduct, all consultations are strictly confidential. With the student’s permission, we can provide information about the student’s progress to his or her instructor.
Instructional Handouts
The Center offers an extensive file of handouts (e.g. MLA Documentation, Generating Ideas for Writing, and Writing the Research Paper) that serve as resources both for Writing Center consultations and for use by our students, and faculty. In addition, we are always eager to hear of any handouts that users would like to see developed.
Other Writing Resources
We maintain a growing library of dictionaries, handbooks, documentation and style manuals, readers, periodicals, literature, and other writing resources for students to use. We also keep files of writing assignments, model papers, and other information for faculty whose students use the Center.

Other Services
The Writing Center offers a full-range of additional in-house services:
- Free wireless Internet access and computer use for class-related activities and/or academic purposes
