Turtle Cove Resumes K-12 Outreach Programs at New Classroom Facility
15 November 2007 Michael Greene
New dock facility and classroom will stand in for Turtle Cove until repairs are undertaken on the main research station facilities.
After nearly one and one half years of hard work and reorganization efforts, Turtle Cove is ready to announce the renewal of its outreach programs and partial reinstatement of teacher workshops. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita damaged much of the Turtle Cove infrastructure at the main field station, including roofs, porches, docks, boardwalks, windows, etc., but the Galva dock facility and classroom building emerged virtually unscathed when the winds subsided and waters retreated. The brand new facilities have been completed and are the centerpiece of a flurry of educational activity. The new 40-foot pontoon boat has been outfitted as a "floating laboratory" for visitors to the wetlands and will provide a dramatic link between the classroom facilities and the wildlife management areas around Turtle Cove.
