Question 4

Standard 5 Focus Question 4

What process is used to ensure and monitor that each student has access to guidance and resource services that meet the needs of the student?

  • Teachers monitor each student’s behavior, work and interactions for evidence requiring intervention. Teachers may request guidance services for children who exhibit a need for one-on-counseling by a professional. Tangipahoa Parish School System is quick to respond to these requests and will match the service to the specific issue.

  • Teachers may refer students who are experiencing academic difficulties to the SBLC (School Building Level Committee) to determine the need for research based interventions.  Progress toward meeting the intervention objectives is monitored by the SBLC committee members.  Should the interventions prove unsuccessful at the child’s instructional level, then an evaluation may be conducted by Pupil Appraisal Services.  Should the student meet the eligibility criteria specified in Bulletin 1508, the student may receive special education services as specified in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).  These services include a range of academic services, Speech Therapy, Occupational therapy, Physical therapy, as well as gifted, talented art, music and drama services.  IEPs are developed for each student with input from school, home and parish. The primary service provider monitors progress toward goals and reports progress to the parents. On each anniversary of the initial IEP there is a formal update and review of each student’s plan.

  • The Southeastern Laboratory School employs a full-time Special Education/resource teacher and a full-time paraprofessional who monitor the student’s progress toward their IEP goals.  Speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy services are also provided to eligible students.  Currently at the Laboratory School there is one full-time child-specific paraprofessional.

  • Students identified as gifted receive specialized services once a week with other gifted children from the local community at a nearby elementary school. Talented art, music and drama students receive services on campus by certified teachers in these areas.  The gifted and talented referrals are accepted at the beginning of each semester with an additional one for minority students in November.

  • TPSS also provides a nurse who is on campus at least once a week. She oversees the medical needs of our students as well as insuring all medical records are up to date. The nurse provides in-services for the faculty and staff when necessary.

  • Southeastern Laboratory School Bulletin 504 committee regularly meets to determine which students require classroom accommodations or modifications.  The committee is comprised by an official school designee, classroom teacher, and parents.
