Standard 5 Focus Question 1
What is the process for recruitment, induction, placement, development, evaluation, and retention of qualified teachers, administrators, and support staff?

- Southeastern Louisiana University Laboratory School is K through 8 school housed on a university campus within the College of Education and Human Development. Due to this special relationship, our teachers are required to have a Masters degree with 5 years teaching experience. Our student population number tops at 227. These parameters create a special setting where there are only 9 classroom teachers, 6 support teachers (art, library, music, physical education, and resource), 2 administrators and several support staff. There is very little turnover in this small faculty. When recruitment is required, a search team is assembled. Ads are placed on the Internet site of Tangipahoa Parish School System and in the local paper, the Daily Star. After hiring, the new teacher is welcomed and mentored by his/her colleagues.
- Our professional staff is quite small in number and therefore many responsibilities are required of them. Professional development is encouraged. There are in-house continuous workshops. Funds are also allocated for professional development attending in-state and out of state conferences. These hours are logged into each teacher’s professional growth plan. During yearly evaluations, teachers revisit their growth plans and set new objectives that correlate to their professional development.
- Again, we are a very small faculty and staff with many responsibilities. Just recently support staff has been employed to assist in daily operations as well as a computer lab teacher. We all work to serve our students enabling them to achieve their highest potential.
