Question 1

Standard 4 Focus Question 1

How is the assessment system currently used in your school to analyze changes in student performance?

Students

  • Upon receiving the School’s Performance Reports, we check to see if the school met and/or exceeded its’ AYP target.  Next, the administration analyzes student’s test scores to see which students pass or failed the LEAP in order to make recommendations for remediation.  We are proud to say that during the 2006-2007 school year 100% of our students in grades 4th and 8th pass the LEAP.  After analyzing the schools overall performance, administration provides each teacher a copy of his/her current students LEAP or iLEAP scores.  The teachers’ use this information to analyze their student’s scores to see if there is an improvement in their student’s skills as compared to their last years scores.  Teachers also view the scores to see if there is an area in which many of the students scored low or did not master.  If an area is identified as a weakness, the teacher makes an effort to provide more instruction in that area the following year. With the younger students we use DAR, and IOWA to compare test scores.  We will be using DIBBLES as soon as we receive the workbooks.

  • We also use state computer programs such as “My Skills Tutor”, “Louisiana Pass”, and more recently “EAGLE” to assist student with mastering the state’s GLEs.  We use these programs to assist the students with catching up on any qeaknesses they may have, we also use these programs as homework assignments so parents can see the type of material their child is learning throughout the school year.  We have “Accelerated Reading” at our school.  This program allows us to identify student weaknesses in reading comprehension.

  • Each of the above programs serve as a way for us to track and identify student strengths and weaknesses on a regular basics.  Once an area of need is identified, additional assistance is given to the student(s) in the area(s) in order to help the student master the skill. (We recently hired a paraprofessional to work with low performing students in grades k-3 for early intervention).  Intervention is also given after school (we have a free afterschool tutoring program available to students in grades 3-8).  Tutoring is available Monday-Thursday.

  • We use teacher generated assessment material to check student performance daily.  Teachers pre/post test students; evaluated and analyze student work as well as homework to determine which areas they need to re-teach.  Teachers analyze end of unit tests, conduct informal observations to observe changes in student’s performance.

  • Lastly, we discuss student’s standardized test scores and student classroom performance with our stakeholders.  Our PTO has recently informed us that they would like to see our math scores increase.  As a result, we have asked the parish with assistance in this area.  We have requested over seven-thousand dollars to purchase Accelerated Math.  A program designed to increase student math skills.  The College of Education informed us they wanted college students to work with our students.  To fulfill their request, starting next fall, we will have master level student-teachers at the school.  University faculty wanted students across majors to work with the Lab students in a “Service Learning Project”. Consequently, during the 06-07 school year, we developed an after school tutorial program in which students across majors can work with our students.

  • Working with individual parents as well as the PTO, we secured over $1,500 to fund our after school tutoring program (i.e. snacks, drinks, etc).  The college of education provided college students to work one-on-one with students. Southeastern Louisiana University Student Government Association gave the school $3,500 for our tutoring program (flash cards, calculators, dictionaries, computer software, pens, pencils, etc).  University sororities and fraternities volunteered to be our after-school tutors.  They also served as chaperones for our school dances, and mentors to our students throughout the school year.  We believe this collaborative among these stakeholders resulted in the school being named a 4 star school and having a School Performance Score of 121.6.
