Application Process for Study Abroad

This page is for students from other schools or universities, or for those not currently enrolled as a Southeastern student, who are planning to participate in Study Abroad 2010 through Southeastern Louisiana University.

Congratulations on your decision to study abroad with Southeastern Louisiana University!

Please read the following information and follow the links  for all Study Abroad application forms and information.

On this page, you will find helpful information...sure to make your application process simple, quick, and painless!  Just follow the following steps and you'll be on your way to another country before you know it!

Step 1:  Begin the admissions process for Southeastern Louisiana University.  You can start the Study Abroad application process, even if you are not fully admitted yet.

You must be fully admitted to Southeastern Louisiana University in order to be registered for Study Abroad classes.

For Admissions, click here!

Step 2:   Find out who your Faculty Program Coordinator is and set up either an in person interview or a phone interview.  This is the person who will be leading your trip.  At this meeting, you and your Coordinator will discuss the classes and what's to be expected during your trip.

You must complete this step first.  The Coordinator will then send approval to the Study Abroad office, so that you can apply.

Step 3:  Fill out the Study Abroad application completely and include the required number of passport sized photographs.  Turn this in with your $100 deposit (check or money order only) in person in McGehee Hall 210 on campus, or if you live out of town, you can mail it to:

International Initiatives will only accept applications that are accompanied by this deposit.  If you are out of the area, you may mail or fax any of the required forms or deposits to the International Initiatives Office.

Step 4:  Give a Letter of Recommendation form (included in application packet) to two different teachers and have them either send it directly to International Initiatives via Fax to (985) 549-5071 or return them to us yourself.  They cannot be completed by the teachers accompanying you on your trip!

Step 5:  A staff member at International Initiatives will contact you by phone to make sure that you fully understand the process, the stipulations, and advise you on how to proceed for your particular program.

Step 6:  You will receive an electronic official acceptance letter, officially welcoming you to your program!

Step 7:  Here are things you can do while you are waiting for your acceptance letter:

1- Visit your Financial Aid Office and make sure that your financial aid is available for this trip and your aid is configured for Study Abroad and sent to the right University for the term in which you will be attending.  After this visit, you should send proof of financial aid to Study Abroad to the International Initiatives office.

2- Apply for your passport!  It can take several months to come in and you don't want to wait and apply too close to deadlines!  You can apply locally through your United States Post Office.  You must have at least six months validity on your passport at the time of travel to use it, so if you already have a passport, make sure that you meet this requirement.  If it is less than six months until the expiration date, you need to get a new one.

Note: If you are going to China or Australia, you will need to send in your current passport to the Study Abroad office so that we can obtain your Visa for you!  It is important that you obtain a valid passort as early as possible!

For passport and travel information, click here!

3- Take care of individual program requirements.  Some programs may require an extra form, such as a Visa form, or extra passport sized photographs .  You will be told about any extra program requirements by a Study Abroad staff member at the time of application.

Step 8:  You are now enrolled in Study Abroad at Southeastern Louisiana University!  Make sure to check your email daily, as it is the primary means of communication between you and the International Initiatives Office!  Please don't hesitate to call or visit International Initiatives with any questions, concerns, or assistance during this process, as it is our goal to help you have a fun, rewarding, and successful trip abroad!
