Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders
The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders offers a master’s degree program that encompasses both the academic course work and clinical practicum experiences necessary to meet requirements for state licensure and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Certificate of Clinical Competence in speech-language pathology (ASHA CCC-SLP). Students pursuing State of Louisiana Ancillary Certification as a Speech Therapist should consult with a faculty advisor for specific requirements.
The Master of Science degree in CSD requires successful completion of a master's
thesis or successful completion of six (6) credit hours of CSD electives and a comprehensive
examination. Thus, the thesis is an option that replaces six (6) hours of electives
and the comprehensive examination. The requirements for each of these programs are
different and are described fully in the Degree Requirements link.
Graduate students in CSD have access to a number of relevant resources, including:
(1) the Southeastern Louisiana University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, a teaching
facility that provides a context for application of clinical skills while serving
members of the community with communication disorders; (2) numerous opportunities
for field-based experiences in regional hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers,
long-term care facilities and private practice settings; (3) specific instrumentation
and software for precise assessment and objective treatment of communication disorders;
(4) an award-winning professional student organization dedicated to enhancing the
overall graduate educational experience; and (5) cutting-edge data collection technology,
including a bank of digital video cameras and a state of the art clinic monitoring
system.
