Southeastern Louisiana University’s Division of Extended Studies is offering non-credit courses for both career and personal enrichment this spring.
     New spring 2012 non-credit career enrichment courses offered include Business Writing, Introduction to AutoCAD Drafting, Introduction to Screenwriting, Basic Film Acting, and Digital Voice Court Recording. New courses in personal enrichment include Introduction to Social Media for Senior Citizens, Astrology ‘Sun Signs 12 Keys to the Soul,’ and Introduction to Stained Glass. 
     “Workforce and professional development continues to be a focus for 2012 Continuing U course offerings” said Joan Gunter, assistant vice president for extended studies. “Our courses are designed to build participants’ resumes and to assist organizations with professional development through customized training.  
     “Our career enrichment courses underscore the value of continuing education, especially for top demand occupations in Louisiana,” Gunter added. “By providing continuing education units (CEU’s), Southeastern’s non-credit courses assist participants with their personal career portfolio and organizations with a nationally recognized standard for training.”
     Existing non-credit courses such as SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management) Test Prep, Notary Test Prep and ACT Test Prep are offered in Hammond, Mandeville, and Walker. Personal enrichment courses such as How to Write a Novel, Digital Photography, Instant Piano for Busy People and Beginning Harmonica are being offered due to their popularity, Gunter said.
     Southeastern offers a wide variety of non-credit courses taught by Southeastern faculty and qualified professional instructors. Classes are offered at Southeastern’s main campus in Hammond, the Livingston Literacy and Technology Center in Walker, and the St. Tammany Center in Mandeville. ACT TEST PREPARATION

This course is designed to help high school students develop the skills to improve their ACT scores. Mathematics and English will be emphasized. The maximum number of students per session is 15. If paid and registered one week prior to start of class, students will receive ACT prep book at no additional cost.  This five-week course will be held on Monday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00pm beginning February 27th.  The cost for this course will be $250.

INSTANT PIANO FOR BUSY PEOPLE

In just one enjoyable evening, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to make piano playing a part of your life; learning chords, not notes.  You'll learn all the chords needed to play any song, any style, any key.  This is an absolutely beginning class in chord piano techniques.  Instructor will collect $25 in class for a book and a 68 minute practice CD.  This 3.5 hour seminar is available Thursday March 1st from 6:00 to 9:30.  The course will cost $55.

MICROSOFT PROJECT 2010

Students will learn to build and modify a project schedule which will assist them in managing their projects. In this instructor-led course, students will be led with through the process of building and modifying a schedule using hands-on exercises including: adding tasks, organizing these tasks in a work breakdown structure (WBS), sequencing (adding task relationship), creating and assigning resources, organizing project information, updating the schedule, and generating reports.  This one-day workshop will be available on Tuesday April 24th from 8:00am to 4:00pm.  The cost for this workshop will be $299 with the book provided.

INTRODUCTION TO JAVA, PART 1

This is a non-credit, professional development course for entry level. This course will enable students to create programs to solve mathematical problems in business situations. It will help students to learn the notion of programming using Object-Oriented Language.  This two-hour workshop will be available Thursday night on March 9th from 6:00 to 8:00pm.  The cost for this course is $100.  Book must be purchased by student.

INTRODUCTION TO JAVA, PART 2

HOW MONEY WORKS PART 1: FINANCIAL SUCCESS ON A TEACHER SALARY

This free, non-credit class will introduce educators and future educators to the relationship between time, savings and debt. It is part of a three-part series, which can be taken in any order. Prerequisites: There are no technology requirements and no prerequisites for this class. CEUs earned: (0.1 Continuing Education Units for 1 hour) Can be combined with Part II & III for 0.3 CEU.  This course will be offered on March 20th or the 26th from 4:00 to 5:00 pm.

NOTARIAL PREPARATION COURSE

This course is designed to help students successfully pass the statewide Louisiana Notarial Exam.  However, it is also a great refresher course on Civil law basics and sound notarial practice for commissioned notaries and attorneys as well. The course topics include: duties of a notary, contracts, judicial acts, donations and sale, wills, miscellaneous acts, and more.  This fifteen week course will be held Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 9:00 pm starting February 7th.  The cost for this course is $625 and the books required for the course will cost an additional $300.

MICROSOFT WORD

This course is designed for individuals for students who have basic computer knowledge, but would like to learn Microsoft Word. Students will learn to create, format, and modify Word documents. This includes using graphics and tables to enhance documents. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.  This two-day workshop is available from 5:30 to 8:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday February 28th and March 1st.  The cost for this workshop is $120.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

This course is specially designed for Senior Citizens. In this course, students will learn the basic skills needed to get started with personal computers and to work with the various features, tools and options available in Windows. Students will learn the basic components of a personal computer, how to customize Windows, simple editing techniques, and how to manage files and folders. In addition, students will explore system tools. Emphasis will be on a measured and methodical approach to the material.  This four-hour workshop is available Thursday March 1st from 1:00 to 5:00pm.  The cost for this workshop is $100.

WRITING FOR PUBLIC RELATIONS AND MARKETING

This course is recommended for business executives, managers, supervisors or any professional interested in improving their public relations, skills. In these lean economic times, it’s very important for organizations to communicate effectively with all their audiences. The course equips participants with the essential skills for developing and writing public relations materials, specifically news releases, "pitch letters," backgrounders, and fact sheets for both print and broadcast media.  This four-week course will be offered Monday nights from 6:00 to 8:00pm on March 5th.  The cost for this workshop will be $245.

UNDERSTANDING LEGAL CONTRACTS

This course consists of an overview of contracts in Louisiana with specific discussion of the enforceability of oral and written contracts. Topics will include the effects of ambiguity of contractual terms; good faith requirements; and methods of enforcing contracts. Important for discussion will be the "parole evidence rule": when written contractual terms may be explained by testimonial and other documentary evidence. Breach of contract and consequences of the breach will also be discussed. Any person, organization. or public body customarily involved in contracts will benefit from the course through awareness of some of the pitfalls or entering into contracts.  This three-week course will be offered from 6:00 to 7:30pm starting March 12th.  The course will cost $100.

EXCEL LEARNING SERIES: INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL

This course is designed for individuals for students who have little or no experience with Microsoft Excel. Excel is an important tool for almost any business environment. Students will learn to create a file, enter data, create formulas, navigate spreadsheets, and understand the basic components of the Excel environment.  Students will also learn format, edit, and save documents. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.  This course will be offered from 5:30 to 8:30 pm starting on Tuesday March 13th.  The cost for this course will be $120.

INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

This course is specially designed for Senior Citizens. In this course, you will be introduced to Windows Explorer and learn how to take full advantage of all that the Internet has to offer. You will explore the interface and learn new ways to obtain information. In addition, you will be exposed to Internet terminology and visit some very interesting websites. Emphasis will be on a measured and methodical approach to the material.  This four-hour workshop is available Tuesday March 13th from 1:00 to 5:00pm.  The cost for this workshop is $100.

INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL MEDIA FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

This course is specially designed for Senior Citizens. In this course, you will be introduced to various forms of social media and learn how to take full advantage of all that these have to offer. You will explore the facebook, twitter, and/or myspace sites and learn how to enhance communication with family and friends through the Internet. Topics may also include video chatting such as Skype and FaceTime as well as mobile communications like SMS and MMS. Emphasis will be on a measured and methodical approach to the material and real-world applications of the subject.  This four-hour workshop is available Thursday March 22nd from 1:00 to 5:00pm.  The cost for this workshop is $100.

EXCEL LEARNING SERIES: INTERMEDIATE EXCEL

This course is designed for individuals for students who already have basic Microsoft Excel skills. All types of organizations have data that needs to be analyzed and managed. Through this course, students will learn how to use advanced formulas and functions, create and edit charts and graphs, use absolute cell references, create and sort tables, protect workbooks, and create  Pivot Tables to summarize data.  Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.  This course will be offered from 5:30 to 8:30 pm starting on Tuesday March 27th.  The cost for this course will be $120.

This course is designed for individuals for students who want to learn more advanced features of Microsoft Excel. Through this course, students will learn how to use advanced functions such as lookup tables, nested IF statements, how to import data from other sources, using functions to read and manipulate data in cells, and how to record Macros to automate spreadsheets.  Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of completion.  This course will be offered from 5:30 to 8:30 pm starting on Tuesday April 17th.  The cost for this course will be $120.

ASTROLOGY “SUN SIGNS 12 KEYS TO THE SOUL”

Philosophical look into the twelve sun signs of humanity.  A unique approach to analyzing the 12 zodiac cycles of nature, and how humans react to these annual cycles.  Course will be taught from the book Sun Signs Twelve Keys to the Soul.  Information learned from this book will enhance every facet of life imaginable.  This information will allow the student to better understand themselves and everyone around them, thus helping to create a truer and more rewarding way of life.  This course will be held Thursday nights from 6:00pm to 8:00pm starting March 1st.  The cost for this course will be $70 with materials included.

FINANCIAL STRATEGIES FOR RETIREMENT

With financial independence, retirement can be the most fulfilling time of your life. This class covers important money management concepts and issues that are important to people at or near retirement. Topics include how to reduce pressures on your retirement income, how to make appropriate health care decisions, especially who will provide care, where you will live and how you will pay for your health care. We will also explore some options that allow you to transfer assets to other generations of your family. A “hear it, see it, read it, write it” teaching method makes it easy for you to understand and remember this practical information. By condensing up-to-date financial information into three classroom sessions, the Financial Strategies for Successful Retirement Seminar gives you the answers you need. HOW TO WRITE A NOVEL

This course will cover the basics of writing novel-length fiction, including story structure, plotting, character development, dialogue, description, and point of view.   This course is available Tuesday nights from 7:00pm to 8:00pm starting February 28th.  The cost for this course is $150.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY FOR BEGINNERS OR INTERMEDIATE

The beginning course will help those wanting to improve their skills with their digital camera.  The course will cover the differences between point-and-shoot vs. SLR, equipment settings, zoom, white balance, and even loading their images onto a computer or a website.  The intermediate level will build on the basics while progressing to lighting, composition, posing, camera operation, and technical skills such as adjusting ISO, shutter speed, and aperture.  They will be offered from 6:00 to 9:00 pm with Beginner on Thursday March 1st and Intermediate on Thursday the 8th.  The cost for these courses will be $95 each.

BEGINNING HARMONICA

This course puts you behind the “harp”, playing blues, rock and country style by the end of the session. Theory is kept to the essentials, with emphasis on practical techniques such as hand positioning, tongue-blocking and lip-pursing, exploring simple melodies, theory of blues, rock, and country styles, with a class performance of basic blues. Remember, cheaper harps are hard to play!  This two-week workshop will be held on Tuesday March 6th & 13th from 6:00 to 8:00pm.  The cost for this workshop will be $60.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP FOR PHOTOGRAPHY - INTERMEDIATE

ROBERT’S RULES OF ORDER (SPECIAL)

Roberts Rules of Order govern the conduct of most meeting of clubs, associations, large or small corporations, and public bodies. Discussions will include the techniques for members of such organizations to express their will in a competent, straight-forward manner so as to present the views of the members on issues and, at the same time, prevent chaos during the meetings. Voting methods, polling of votes, and the effects of abstention of voting will be explained as well as appropriate consideration of motions, amendments to motions, tabling of motions, and preparation of and changing of pre-meeting agendas. Anyone belonging to, and particularly those who conduct meetings in, civil clubs, private, social, and fraternal organizations, and public bodies will find useful tools in this program.  This four-hour workshop starts Friday March 23rd from 8:00am to 12:00pm.  The cost for this course is $50.
