Professor C. Roy Blackwood currently serves Southeastern Louisiana University as Interim Director of the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts and Fanfare. He also directs Educational Initiatives at the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum for Southeastern, the educational partner of the museum. He chaired the university's Visual Arts Department from 1984-2001 and directed the Cultural Resource Management curriculum, which he co-founded in 1985.
An accomplished sculptor who has exhibited nationally and internationally and received
numerous grants, including an NEA, Blackwood was the first recipient of Southeastern's
President's Award for Excellence in Artistic Activity, one of Southeastern's highest
accolades. He is co-founder of Fanfare, Southeastern's fall festival of the arts,
sciences and humanities in 1985. He states, "when our president cancelled our football
program, three of us felt there was as opportunity to celebrate the arts, rather than
football, at Homecoming". Among his many honors, he recently was elected a Fellow
of the Royal Society for the Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce, a 250 year-old international
multi-disciplinary organization based in London, and, as a result, he and his wife
were introduced to the Queen of England and Duke of Edinborough at a palace garden
party in 2004. In the spring of 2005 Blackwood was named a Distinguished Member of
the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
As a Phi Kappa Phi member, Blackwood was the Southeastern chapter's secretary and
vice president before serving as president from 1993-1995. On the national level,
he served on the editorial advisory committee of Phi Kappa Phi's journal, "The Forum",
from 1995-1998 and on the selection committee for the honor society's prestigious
national fellowships from 1998-2004. He served as Director of Fellowships from 2004-2011
He is a former president and three-term board member of the National Council of Art
Administrators and served as founding executive vice president of the Hammond Cultural
Foundation. He also is actively involved regionally and nationally with the Boy Scouts
of America serving as Vice President for Program for the Istrouma Area Council and
having served as scoutmaster, troop committee chair and as the Chairman of the Council's
fifty member Camping Committee. Additionally, as one of a 12-member team from across
the country recently completing a two-year process designing and publishing a new
National Youth Leadership Training course that debuted at Philmont Scout Ranch, and
Blackwood served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for the National Advanced Youth Leadership
Experience also at Philmont Scout Ranch.
Blackwood received his Bachelor's degree from Ft. Hays University in 1970 and M.F.A.
from the University of Colorado in 1972 and lives with his wife, Carolyn, in Hammond.
