Library of Congress: Teaching with Primary Sources
Teaching with Primary Sources program from The Library of Congress collaborates with various schools, universities, libraries, and foundations in order to help classroom teachers discover the availability of the Library’s vast collection of digitized primary sources (over 11 million!) that are freely available to improve learning and teaching in the classroom. The Library of Congress also offers various online programs available from their website that are designed to help teachers in their classroom such as “The Learning Page” and “American Memory”.
Southeastern Louisiana University has partnered with The Library of Congress to bring
the Teaching with Primary Sources program to Louisiana. The generous funding provided
by the Library of Congress will be used to expand current course offerings and to
create new opportunities for students, faculty, and practicing teachers. All the Teaching
with Primary Source Level I workshops at Southeastern Louisiana University are available
free for any K-12 teacher and are usually given during the summer months. Samples
of the diverse activities to enhance the primary source learning experience during
the summer workshops include a variety of guest speakers and a field trip to primary
source locations in the local area. These summer workshops can also count towards
professional development hours. The Level II and III program at Southeastern Louisiana
University are both currently offered as a 100% online graduate class. The in-state
tuition and fees for this graduate class are currently paid by the Teaching with Primary
Sources program at Southeastern Louisiana University fora limited number ofteachers
who have successfully completed the Level I workshop. The Teaching with Primary Sources
program also offers free professional development opportunities for schools such as
mini-workshops for teachers and teacher candidates during the regular school year.
The descriptions of the three levels of the Teaching with Primary Sources program at Southeastern Louisiana University are:
Level I Foundation
In this level participants will know what primary sources are and understand their
value in teaching them. They will learn to navigate, locate, save and present primary
sources from the Library of Congress website. This level will enable participants
to gain an understanding of effective instructional practices for teaching of primary
sources. Also, this will demonstrate how to create sound learning experiences that
integrate primary sources from the Library of Congress, allowing educators to begin
to develop and teach lessons using primary sources.
Level II Advanced
The Level II phase allows for participants to gain a thorough understanding of effective
teaching practices using primary sources and the ability to identify exemplary learning
experiences. It demonstrates how to create standards-based learning experiences in
integrating primary sources from the Library of Congress that exemplify effective
practices. Level II shows how to evaluate primary source-based learning experiences
and investigate the effects of primary source-based instruction on student learning.
Level III Ambassador
This phase shows participants how to mentor colleagues on effective instructional uses of primary sources and evaluate learning experiences for widespread dissemination and use. In this level, participants will interact and collaborate with fellow Library of Congress Ambassadors and conduct research into the effective use of primary sources in education. They will also publish and present at professional meetings and lead professional development activities.
