Field Trip Photos from Soc 360 - Fall 2009
Dr. Burley’s Environmental Sociology class (SOC 360) got a first-hand look at the sustainable rebuilding on the 9th Ward and Holy Cross Neighborhood in New Orleans on Oct. 21. Their tour guide was community organizer and environmental justice coordinator for the Sierra Club, Darryl Malek-Wiley.

They visited the School at Blair Grocery an urban sustainable
agriculture school for local youth where they learned about food
justice, food security and the building of compost!

We toured the blocks where the Make It Right homes are located. These grasses aren’t just pretty to look at. They assist in absorbing and cleaning excess rainwater thus reducing flooding and stormwater runoff.

Students play in a sustainably built playground. Note the plants at the edges which absorb stormwater runoff.

placement and position of windows that make the most of passive
cooling and heating of the home.
