Reconnect's Mt. Trashmore Photos
On Nov. 18th Reconnect spearheaded an event called Mt. Trashmore with coordination from the SLU chapters of the NAACP and Amnesty International. The aim was to raise awareness about waste and to call more attention to SLU’s recycling program. The students got the idea from similar events at Northwestern University (IL) and Harvard. The students collected one day’s trash from Fayard Hall and a partial day’s trash from D. Vicker’s and piled it on tarps next to the Katrina and Rita Memorial Fountain. They had signs about waste, environmental justice and recycling lining the walkways. They met and talked with many passerby throughout the day and the newspaper, The Advocate, ran a story on the event that appeared on Thanksgiving Day. As good sociologists, the students also used the event to build relationships with each other creating a sense of community (some of the women taught each other how to knit!).
