Dr. Robert Nash has served as adjunct instructor of
double bass and electric bass at Southeastern since in 2008. He is an active performer and teacher on both instruments, with an ongoing involvement in a wide variety of traditional and contemporary musical genres, from symphonic and chamber music to jazz, blues, zydeco and gospel.
As a double bassist, he has performed with almost every regional symphonic ensemble as either a regular or substitute member, including the Louisiana Philharmonic, Louisiana Sinfonietta, Baton Rouge Symphony, Lake Charles Symphony, Gulf Coast Symphony and Rapides Symphony.
He has recorded jazz with pianist Garth Alper, drummer Simon Lott, vocalist Ed Perkins and others, and accompanied artists such as trumpeter Byron Stripling, songwriter/arranger Marvin Hamlisch, and country/gospel legend Gov. Jimmie Davis in concert.
In addition, he is regularly featured in local and regional venues, including fine-dining restaurants and theaters, performing jazz and blues with bands and collaborators.
Students with a diverse set of interests are represented in the bass studio, and all are equally welcome.
Dr. Nash earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music, where his major teachers were Julius Levine and Kirk B. Smith, and a DMA degree in double bass performance and jazz studies from Louisiana State University (1999), where he studied with Dr. William Grimes.
A native of Cincinnati, OH and longtime resident of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Nash has lived in Baton Rouge since 1990.
