Vocal Ensembles
Opera/Music Theatre Workshop
The Opera/Music Theatre Workshop offers students an opportunity to perform in fully
staged productions of operas and Broadway musicals. All facets of theatre, from costume
and set design to acting and singing, are explored in this ensemble, which is open
to all university students. Each semester a production with orchestra is presented
to the public in the Pottle Music Building Auditorium or other campus theater settings.
Some of the works recently presented include Tartuffe, Suor Angelica, The Secret Garden, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the
Forum, Cosi Fan Tutti, My Fair Laydy, Fiddler on the Roof, The Tender Land, Gondoliers,
Die Fledermaus, The Marriage of Figaro, Patience, Summer and Smoke, The Merry Wives
of Windsor, The Pirates of Penzance, Putting It Together, The Music Man, Dido and
Aeneas and The Sound of Music.
Concert Choir
The Concert Choir, Southeastern's premiere auditioned choral ensemble, is devoted
to performance excellence in choral music and to providing an atmosphere which will
help prepare students for the challenges of an ever-changing and highly competitive
musical world. The ensemble also explores all genres of music for the chamber vocal
ensemble. In fall 2004, the Concert Choir commissioned Canzoni d'amore by Theodore Morrison, a work for SSATB, two French horns and piano. The Concert Choir
also performed the world premiere of Stephen Suber's His Rhythm! in 2005. The group is frequently invited to perform at ACDA and MENC conferences,
tours annually, and has been heard across the United States and Europe.
Women's Chorale
The Women's Chorale is a unique and distinguished choir in which members are given
the opportunity to explore music written for reble voices. The choir is dedicated
to performance excellence and choral literature for premiere women's ensembles. The
choir performs works selected from the traditional and contemporary literature, and
sings in a variety of languages and styles. Most members of the Women's Chorale are
either majors or minors in music; however, Women's Chorale auditions are open to all
treble voices who desire a high quality musical experience. Recently performed repertoire
includes works by Britten, Daley, Dvorak, Pergolesi, Rachmaninov and Walker.
University Chorus & Northshore Choral Society
Choral singing at Southeastern is enjoyed by music majors and non-majors alike in
a variety of ensembles. The Northshore Choral Society and University Chorus are non-auditioned
ensembles comprised of university students and community members. With more than 100
singers representing many university majors and community professions, these ensembles
regularly perform major works with professional orchestra and soloists. Repertoire
includes Mozart's Requiem and Mass in c minor, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Faure's Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, Schubert's Mass in G, and Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs. In 2004, The University Chorus and Northshore Choral Society performed two patriotic
choruses with the Southeastern Wind Symphony at the Columbia Theater for the Performing
Arts. The choirs presented Samuel Barber's Prayers of Kierkergaard in December 2005.
