Advanced Professional Degrees
The graduate music program at Southeastern Louisiana University is designed to continue one's professional preparation for musical careers or to prepare for doctoral studies. Master of Music degrees are offered in Music Performance (36 graduate credit hours) and Music Theory (33 graduate credit hours).
Southeastern Louisiana University is located within an hour's driving distance of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, affording our graduate students the opportunity to use the excellent research facilities at Tulane, LSU, and the University of New Orleans. Our musicians have access to performance opportunities with professional orchestras throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
The Music Department’s Graduate Handbook describes in detail the requirements for both programs. Our departmental requirements conform to the broader policies and regulations of The Office of Research and Graduate Studies. Admission is determined by academic credentials and an audition.
Prospective students are urged to apply for admission as early as possible, but no sooner than a year before the term you plan to enroll, and to utilize the on-line application.

How to Apply
Details for applying to graduate programs and on-line application can be found on the university’s Graduate Admissions Process page.
In addition to the Graduate Application to Southeastern, an audition and/or interview must be scheduled directly with the graduate advisor and appropriate faculty members. On-campus auditions and interviews are strongly recommended. However, if an on-campus audition is not possible, audio and/or video tapes of performances may be submitted. Admission is either unconditional or with conditions. Please contact graduate advisor (Dr. Glen Hemberger) for more information.
Financial Aid
Financial aid packages and scholarships are available to graduate students on a competitive basis. Incoming Master's degree students may apply for graduate assistantships, which range from $4,200 to $4,700 per year plus tuition and nonresident fee waivers. These fellowships also include full waiver of all in-state and out-of-state tuition. Duties may include classroom teaching, applied lessons, assisting in ensemble programs, and other departmental services.
There are also assistantships that are specifically for work with the Marching Band. Students with an interest in the Marching Band Assistantships should contact Dr. Glen Hemberger.
International Students
International students from non-English speaking countries who do not hold a degree from an American university must provide a TOEFL score. A score of 575 (Paper Based Test) or equivalent 233 (Computer Based Test) or above is required for admission. One cannot be admitted without a TOEFL score. International students who hold degrees from English speaking American, Canadian, or British universities are not required to provide a TOEFL score.
