About the Department of Languages and Communication
Mission of the Department
The mission of Southeastern Louisiana University's Communication unit is to develop
student competencies in oral, written, and visual communication by providing opportunities
for focused study and research in broadcasting, speech communication, interpersonal communication,
multi-platform journalism, public relations, and/or
organizational communication. Acquisition of communication skills will facilitate participation in the economy, development, and culture of southeast Louisiana and beyond.
The mission of Southeastern Louisiana University's Language Unit is to enable students to utilize their target language and increase their awareness of diverse cultures. Acquisition of communication skills will facilitate participation in the economy, development, and culture of southeast Louisiana and beyond.
The Department aims to provide:
- High-quality instruction;
- Authentic cultural interaction through short-term and long-term (semester and year-
long) study abroad programs, internships in local companies, and
service learning opportunities on- and off-campus;
- Linguistic and cultural expertise in support of the university as a whole, local
regional schools, and the wider community;
- A broad range of scholarly work.
The department boasts chapters of the Public Relations Student Society of America, the Society of Collegiate Journalists (Phi Delta Epsilon chapter) and the Lambda Pie Eta (Epsilon Rho chapter) and Phi Sigma Iota honorary societies. Students are also active in the Press club, Language clubs, and the Organizational Communications Association.
Our students have access to excellent facilities including;
- two all digital computer labs, the Foreign Language Resource Center and the
English Language Learning Lab which enable students to experience second language
learning software applications
- new digital video and audio editing labs
-state-of-the-art writing laboratories
- KSLU Radio and
- The Southeastern Channel- a broadcast television station.
