The new ELRC lab is located in D Vickers 209. It is open Monday - Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm.

 

The center has 18 student stations with Dell computers, headsets and microphone.

Students work on award winning software such as ELLIS and TellMeMore to improve their proficiency in English.

 

The lab is equipped with a ReLANpro Multimedia Lab which allows teachers to view all student stations and control these stations to guide the educational material viewed. Pronunciation recordings are saved and compared as students progress.  

 

Placement

Before beginning work on the computers and with the Instructor, students take a placement exam to determine their level of English proficiency. They will begin at that level and progress at their own pace.

For-Credit Students on F1 Visa (on Campus):

   

  • A series of Written Pre-Tests (grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.)
  • 1 Instructor Correspondence (contact) per week: This correspondence may be made by email, telephone, or attendance at lecture. (Part of Attendance Grade) 
  • Final Exam - A collection of Written Post-Tests & Oral Exam or TOEFL Pre-Test & Oral Exam (as needed). 

 

Students taking EGIS courses for university credit must be admitted to the university. To apply to the university you may submit the online application paperwork and pay the $25. application fee. Courses will then be added during the semester registration dates.

Non-Credit F1 Visa Students:

20 hours per week in Ellis Program, and completion of all levels paid for through Continuing Education.

 

Non-Credit Students not on F1 Visa:

Individualized Instructional Plan will be created to meet student needs based on their personal language proficiency-level, availability for lecture, and/or hours available for Ellis Program.

 

For-Credit Students (Distance Learning):

  • 4 essays per semester
  • This correspondence may be made by email, telephone, or attendance at lecture. (Part of Attendance Grade)
  • Weekly assignments in grammar, mechanics, punctuation, etc.
  • TOEFL Pre-Test (administered online, or paper-based by mail)

 

Lectures (Optional but Recommended):

  • students may attend 1- 3 lectures per week.
  • Group conversation sessions
  • Power-point presentations on grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and spelling
  • U.S. Cultural Lessons
  • ESL students who wish to learn English without university credit may begin four week classes at any time during the academic year. Price per course is $300 paid through continuing education.

 

Curriculum

 

 

ENGLISH FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (EGIS)

97. English Grammar and Conversation. Credit 3 hours. An intensive elementary-intermediate level English language course for students whose native language is not English. This course is designed to prepare students for entry into the required English sequence. The approach is communicative, involving grammar study, oral exercises, dialogues, and role playing. All four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) are developed. This course is not accepted for credit toward graduation. Students will be graded on the basis of Pass (P) or Unsatisfactory (U).

 

98. Reading. Credit 3 hours.This is a reading course designed to help develop comprehension skills in English, including identification, differentiation, and sequencing of main ideas, supporting ideas and details. Particular stress is given to imparting strategies that enable students to understand the overall meaning of an authentic text even when they are unfamiliar with some of the works and structures. An important goal for the students in the course is to transfer the reading skills they already have in their native language to reading in English. This course is not accepted for credit toward graduation, students will be graded on the basis of Pass (P) or Unsatisfactory (U).

 

107. Introduction to Academic Writing. Credit 3 hours. Prerequisite: A grade of P in EGIS 98 or permission of the Department Head. Designed to help non-native speakers improve writing skills. Concentrates on interdisciplinary writing practice and vocabulary study to prepare students for freshman composition, and other college courses.

 

108. Advanced Grammar and TOEFL Preparation. Credit 3 hours. Prerequisite: Completion of EGIS 107 or permission of the Department Head. Advanced grammar review and listening skills development for foreign graduate and undergraduate students who must pass the TOEFL.
