Mission of the English Department

The mission of the Department of English at Southeastern Louisiana State University is to foster the ability to read and write critically and imaginatively for a greater appreciation of the power of language to shape thought and represent the world. The Department strives to provide effective instruction in

  • writing skills fundamental to collegiate studies, the working world, and contemporary culture;
  • the study of complex texts as skilled readers;
  • analysis and critical thinking; and
  • global literary traditions.

To these ends, the Department offers courses in literary studies, basic composition, creative writing, professional writing and publishing studies, composition theory, and linguistics. The offerings and instruction are designed to prepare students for professional careers in teaching, law, professional writing, publishing, and the arts, as well as for graduate study. The Department also promotes participation in cultural activities at the University and within the community, service to external communities, and global awareness.
