May 2013

 

  • EVENT: Women in Technology (WIT) will be hosting their first ever fundraiser Tuesday May 7th from 10am- 3pm at the Student Union. We will be making ice cream with Liquid Nitrogen (so basically dippin' dots). How many times do you actually get to play with your food?! AND we will be accepting credit cards! For more information contact Vivian Boykin, vivian.boykin@selu.edu.

  • EVENT: Women in Technology (WIT) Field Trip to Infinity Center @ NASA. We will be leaving SELU from the Fayard breezeway at 10:30 am (so plan to arrive around 10am),  and driving over to Mississippi to spend a fun day surrounded by science! If you are interested in attending please Vivian Boykin, vivian.boykin@selu.edu. If you do not have transportation we will be carpooling as of right now, so no worries! Price to attend is $5 a head. We will also be arranging lunch on premise.

  • EVENT:Guest speakers Drs. Hongyi Wu and Chris Borst from the Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS)  at the University of Louisiana Lafayette will talk about CACS graduate school opportunities at ULL. All senior Computer Science and Engineering Technology (especially Computer Engineering concentration) students are encouraged to attend.

  • The Spring 2013 SLUGO (Southeastern Louisiana University Game On!) gaming competition is being held on March 15, 2013. This event is coordinated by the Computer Science ACM Student Chapter. February 2013

 

  • Mr. Ethan Reames, OSHE major and member of the Greater Baton Rouge Chapter and the President of the Southeastern Louisiana University Student Section, has been named as a charter member of ASSE's new Student Strategy Task Force.

 

  • The Computer Science Program is featured in an article in the Daily Star newspaper. Read article here.

 

  • Jeremy Spears, Safety Engineer at Bechtel Corporation, passes the CSP exam and becomes CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certified. Jeremy graduated from the OSHE program in 2009.

 

  • Twelve Computer Science students accompanied by Dr. John Burris traveled to Hattiesburg Mississippi to compete in the Deloitte Consulting Programming Competition on February 23, 2013. All teams completed at least one programming problem - a great accomplishment. Congratulations all students!! The overall placement of the Southeastern teams was excellent when compared to the other competing universities.  Final results (there were 17 teams in total):  
    • (2nd Place) Team Southeastern Green: Andrew Gray, Rodney Garland, and Justin Wright
    • (3rd Place) Team Southeastern Gold: Darshan Amatya, Diwas Bhattarai, and Arjun Sharma
    • (9th Place) Team Silver Monkey: Anthony Ma, Matthew Jones, and Sylvia Charchut
    • (14th Place) Team Equinox: Sunil Shahi, Santosh Aryal, and Saket Khatiwada

 

  • Michael Kramer, Industrial Technology graduate (1997) and senior designer with New Orleans-based Solomon Group, puts together the nine stages that CBS used in its coverage of Super Bowl XLVII in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Read full article in The Advocate [HERE].

  • EVENT: The OSH&E Fall 2012 Graduation Party was Friday December 7, 2012 5:30 - 8:00 PM at the Trey Yuen restaurant. As part of the event, David West, treasurer and member of the directors for the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), presented the GSP (Graduate Safety Practitioner) Certificates to the five OSH&E Fall 2012 graduates. David Noland, President, and Paul Marks, Vice President, from the Greater Baton Rouge Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (GBRASSE) also presented, and GBRASSE co-sponsored the event.

  • The Southeastern Lousiana University Chapter of the American Welding Society travels to Las Vegas to attend the Annual FabTech / AWS Convention, November 9-15. Tony Blakeney is the faculty advisor travelling with the group of Industrial Technology students.

  • Industrial Technology majors Justin Sanders, Justin Womack, and Brian Whittaker to receive $1,000 scholarships for their role as College Captions in the first place finish of their team at the Viva Technology: Shell STEM Showdown. Sponsored by Shell Oil, the scholarships will be awarded at 24th Annual HENAAC Conference at the Walt Disney Resorts in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The students also received travel grants from Great Minds in STEM to attend the conference. Dr. Roy Bonnette is the faculty mentor for this student group.

  • Engineering Technology Senior Design Group students Julian Williams, Thomas Speer, Leigh Villemarette, and Taylor Micas (in picture below with Michael Correnti from Laborde on right) receive a 4 stroke diesel engine, donated byYanmar and Laborde Products, Inc. The group's senior project is to build a Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV) as part of a contest hosted by the Institute for Affordable Transportation. The faculty advisor on this project is Dr. Junkun Ma.

AWS EVENT: On September 26, the Southeastern Louisiana University Chapters of the American Welding Society, the American Society for Safety Engineers, and American Design Drafting Association holds a fund raising event/cookout. During this event, two 3-wheel bikes were presented to Anzalone Hall's long time custodian. Funds for the gifts were raised by the Industrial Technology students in these organizations.

 

  • Harbor Telematics a subsidiary of St. James Technologies won the 2012 Governor's Award from the Louisiana Technology Council for their Crane Data System. This group is currently made up almost exclusively of Southeastern computer science graduates, led by Matthew Magnuson (shown in picture, third from the left).
