Guest Students
Southeastern's Counseling Program's Guest Student Policy
Enrollment in all counseling courses (i.e., CED, HD, MCFC, or SAC courses) is limited to those formally admitted to the Counseling Program with the following exceptions:
1. Graduates of Southeastern's Counseling Program may take any class offered through the Counseling Program.
2. Certified school counselors, LPCs, LPC interns, LMFTs, and LMFT interns may be allowed to take selected non-clinical courses without formal admission to the program.
3. Students who are in good standing in another counseling program are allowed to take non-clinical courses. Students must obtain permission from their home institution and submit a Verification of Good Standing form.
4. Graduates of CACREP-accredited master's programs may take courses, including required clinical courses, required for post-master's certification.
Approval to take courses is granted on a semester-by-semester basis. Students are required to submit the Verification of Good Standing form EACH semester for the specific courses that they intend to take.
Application Process for Guest Students
(Note: Southern students should see cross-enrollment policy and procedure below)
Students meeting the requirements outlined in our guest student policy should follow the process outlined below:
1. Submit a completed Verification of Good Standing form to the graduate coordinator. The completed form may be faxed to 985-549-3758 or scanned and emailed to selucounseling@selu.edu. This form is required EACH semester for the specific courses the student wishes to take. (Those students who already have a license, certification, or degree will also need to present proof of this to the graduate coordinator).
Students with a counseling degree will simply provide contact information and the courses desired on the form. The graduate coordinator will inform the student as to whether or not the course is available and open.
2. Students must complete the application process for the Graduate School (abiding by all deadlines and paying all fees). Students should enroll as an extended studies student. Students with a degree (and not in another Counseling program) will need to provide proof of a graduate degree. Here is the link for the graduate student application: https://www.selu.edu/future_students/apply/grad_students/
3. Once admitted to the Graduate School, guest students must contact the Graduate Coordinator with their W# to be authorized for specific courses.
Southeastern's Counseling Program's Cross-Enrollment Policy
Southeastern's Counselor Education Program welcomes the chance to embrace students from other learning institutions through our cross enrollment program. At this time, Southern University of Baton Rouge is the only university approved for cross-enrollment which has a Counseling Program.
Under the agreement, a student at the home institution (Southern) is eligible to take up to two courses at the host institution (Southeastern) during a semester, provided the class is not full and the home institution is not offering the same class at the same time (unless that class is full).
Students enrolling as part of a cross-enrollment agreement must follow both institutions' guidelines for cross-enrollment.
Application Process for Cross-Enrollment
1. Students wishing to enroll in a counseling class at Southeastern must first submit a Verification of Good Standing form to the Department of Health and Human Sciences. This form is to be completed with the class(es) the student wishes to take and must be signed by either the student's department head or program coordinator. Once completed, the form may be faxed to 985-549-3758 or scanned and emailed to selucounseling@selu.edu. This form is required EACH semester for the specific courses the student wishes to take.
2. Once the form has been received by the Department of Health and Human Sciences and reviewed by the graduate coordinator, the student will be contacted and informed about the availability of the course(s).
3. If the course is available, then the student will need to follow the cross enrollment procedures for Southern University found at www.subr.edu/index.cfm/page/832/n/649.
4. When Southeastern's Admissions Office receives all of the necessary paperwork from the home university, the student will be given a Southeastern ID number (w#) and authorized for the class(es) for which they were approved.
5. The student will then need to inform his/her home institution that the classes have been scheduled.
Note: Eligibility to take courses does not guarantee that courses will be offered or are open. Class sizes are limited, and Southeastern students are given priority in class enrollment.
