Research Opportunities in Communication
The faculty of the Department of Communication are active scholars publishing and presenting original research at many academic conferences.
To that end, students are given opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom to participate in and/or write his or her own research work.
Students are first given the ability to learn and understand Communication research through COMM 291; Introduction to Communication Theory and Research. Within this course students prepare research and have often presented that research through having their work accepted at regional and national conferences.
Throughout a Communication major's career at Southeastern, he or she will work with many professors that deal in what's termed "Service learning," that is, research projects done at the request of businesses and agencies outside of the university. Each semester students are given many opportunities to be involved in such projects in the fields of Public Relations, Interpersonal Communication, and Broadcast Media.
Every Communication major must complete a capstone course, COMM 498; Professional Seminar in Communication. That course has at its core a major piece of Communication research. It has become a semester tradition that every research paper written for this course is presented at a Colloquium set up just as an academic conference. It is a wonderful evening that allows students to have a taste of what it is like to begin a line of research in the field of Communication.
Of course, there is also the Masters degree in Organizational Communication which stresses research and the furthering of Communication knowledge. Click the link of the left to learn more.
If Communication research interests you, Southeastern is the school for you.
