At the time of his passing, Zachary Alan Bourg was a senior at Ponchatoula High School and a freshman Physics major at Southeastern Louisiana University. He had completed 15 credit hours toward the Physics degree program, up through Calculus II, and was primarily interested in understanding various aspects of the universe. He read widely in the fields of physics, metaphysics, philosophy, and psychology. Zachary also loved math, taught himself German, and enjoyed playing bass guitar. He was a quiet, gentle, kind, and loving person. The Zachary Alan Bourg Physics Research Apprenticeship has been established to provide a legacy befitting of Zachary’s intellectual curiosity.

 

 

Zachary Alan Bourg Physics Research Apprenticeship

The Zachary Alan Bourg Physics Research Apprenticeship provides students with the opportunity to conduct research with a Southeastern Louisiana University Physics professor. Awardees will receive $1,000 per academic year ($500 per fall and spring semesters). The award is continued for a maximum of four years as long as the awardee meets the requirements for the continuation of the award.

Eligibility Requirements for First-Time Awardees

Entering full-time freshman physics major at Southeastern Louisiana University

ACT composite score of 26 or higher

High school GPA of 3.5 or higher

Successful completion of rigorous math and science classes while in high school

Demonstrated involvement in science or math outside of the classroom, with greater weight given to demonstrated involvement in physics

 

Preferences

Preference will be given to eligible applicants from Ponchatoula High School (Ponchatoula, LA), South Terrebonne High School (Bourg, LA), and Ellender Memorial High School (Houma, LA)

 

Continuation of Award (maximum of four award years)

An individual scholarship recipient may receive the $1,000 per year award for a maximum of 4 years as long as the continuation eligibility requirements are met. Those requirements will be provided at the time of the initial award.

 

Application Process for Consideration of a 2013-2014 Award

By April, 30, 2013, submit the following to the Zachary Alan Bourg Physics Research Apprenticeship Selection Committee, Department of Chemistry and Physics, Southeastern Louisiana University, SLU 10878, Hammond, LA 70402:

· Official ACT scores

· Official high school transcripts

· An essay that addresses the student’s:

· Reasons for majoring in Physics

· Interests within Physics

· Prior involvement in physics, science in general, or math outside of the classroom

· Two letters of recommendation
